  13. Pump Fundamentals AMCPL VIJAY ENGINEERING AND MACHINERY COMPANY

  14. AMCPL What is a pump • Pump is defined as a Device which converts the mechanical energy into the hydraulic energy with the help of a prime mover i.e Motor,Engine etc. VIJAY ENGINEERING AND MACHINERY COMPANY

  15. AMCPL Classification of Centrifugal Pump Centrifugal Pump Axial Mixed Radial Single Suction Double Suction Single Suction Single stage Multi stage Self Priming Non Self Priming Single stage Multi stage VIJAY ENGINEERING AND MACHINERY COMPANY

  16. AMCPL Parts of a Pump Casing Impeller. Shaft Bearing assembly VIJAY ENGINEERING AND MACHINERY COMPANY

  17. AMCPL Pump Fundamentals and Selection • Flow capacity: Flow Capacity is the volume of liquid pumped out in one unit of time. • Head: Head is the expression of the total energy content of the liquid referred to a datum. • Characteristic Curves: The performance of a centrifugalpump can be shown graphically on a characteristiccurve • Viscosity: Viscosity is the quantity that describes a fluid's resistance to flow • Temperature: It is the temperature of the liquid to be pumped by the pump. • Ph value: The Nature of the liquid is determined by its Ph value.(acidic nature of water,ph value=7) • Solid Handling Size: The Size of the particles in the liquid which is to be pumped. • Shut Off Head: Shut-off head is the maximum head generated by a centrifugal pump with zero flow and relatively less power. VIJAY ENGINEERING AND MACHINERY COMPANY

  18. AMCPL Net Positive Suction Head • Net positive suction head is the total energy (head ) at the inlet nozzle of pump (in relation to zero absolute pressure ) head of liquid ,at pumping temperature corresponding to vapor pressure of the liquid. • NPSH(A):The net positive suction head available is a function of the pump suction system. • NPSH(R):The net positive suction head required is a function of the pump design at the operating point on the pump performance curve. • NPSH(A) >NPSH(R) VIJAY ENGINEERING AND MACHINERY COMPANY

  19. AMCPL NPSH Available NPSHA = (ha)+/– (hss) – (hfs) –(hvpa) ha = Atmospheric head corresponding to standard atmosphere hss = static suction head hfs = frictional losses in suction pipe hvpa = vapour pressure of liquid at standard temperature and pressure VIJAY ENGINEERING AND MACHINERY COMPANY

  20. Head Power Efficiency NPSHr Flow Desirable Operation Zone of a centrifugal pump AMCPL • Any Centrifugal pump is theoretically designed only for a single flow - at its best efficiency point (BEP). • At the time of selection, the duty point is selected as close as possible to BEP. BEP • It is always desirable to operate the pump near to BEP for best performance, longer life & reliability. Operation away from BEP has its own disadvantages. • Desirable operation zone of a pump is normally 50 % to 120 % of BEP. These values , however, may change from model to model. 50 % 120 % of BEP VIJAY ENGINEERING AND MACHINERY COMPANY
