Seismic Imaging of Crust and Mantle: USArray/ChinArray Collaborative Studies

This working group focuses on collaborative research using portable arrays installed by US or Chinese scientists. Emphasis is placed on data sharing, continuous data archival, and quality control. Collaborations can proceed informally, and the value of data sharing will be demonstrated through focused research databases.

  1. Working Group ISeismic Imaging of the Crust and Mantle -- USArray/ChinArray Comparative StudiesCo-Chairs: Rob van der Hilst and John Chen Data. Focus of most collaborative research will be portable arrays installed by US or Chinese scientists. Open data access is good, but beyond our control. Collaborations can go forward (at least initially) with data shared informally, on a case by case basis. Stress the importance of continuous data archival and QC from the outset. A monolithic data center may not be needed. But standardized formats and ability to exchange data are necessary. PASSCAL model helpful: data sent to the DMC during the experiment and password protected for a period. Develop focused, high profile collaborative research data bases (CDs) to demonstrate the value of data sharing. First, with data following the Wenchuan earthquake.
