  9. Evening and Weekend Program • CA Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) Approved • Adults who want to pursue a career in nursing • Classes - Monday to Thursdays, evenings • Afternoon classes option on a trial basis. • Hospital experiences are on weekends, usually Sat/Sun, but may include Fridays

  10. Community Nursing Experience • May be scheduled during Monday-Friday • Shelters • LA Unified School District • Senior Day Care Centers • Literacy Reading Program

  11. Successful Completion Earns: • A.A. Degree in Nursing • Eligible to take the NCLEX-RN EXAM • Employment opportunities.... • Additional education is often needed for public health, school nursing, nursing education areas.

GE requirements(as noted in catalog) • Lifespan Developmental Psychology • Philosophy- Critical Thinking • Introductory Sociology or Cultural Anthropology • General Studies Elective (GSIII) (History or Art/ Music Appreciation or Political Science or Literature) • RST 41- Bioethics: recommended prior to the nursing program, & no later than the first academic year in the nursing program.

  13. Which courses transfer? • Transfer maximum: • 36 units of equivalent courses, with a GPA 2.5 • Once admitted into program • no credits can be transferred from outside institutions. • “in progress” courses must be noted on application • Final official transcript(s) is required.

  15. Two options available • Pre- Nursing Option (2.5 - 3 years) • Take GE courses in first semester(s) • Start nursing courses after completing GE courses • Nursing Option (2-2 1/2 years) • Transfer all GE courses, start nursing program

Religious Studies Requirement RST 41-Biomedical Issues &Christian Ethics • Religion or ethics courses offered through • Philosophy, • History, or • Literature departments will not meet the requirement • This course is recommended prior to enter the nursing program but may be taken concurrently during the 1st academic year.

  18. Evening/Weekend Program: • FULL-TIME: • Rigorous, • Intense. • Prior to admission must plan for • Time management • Consistent support system • Course load: 8 to 13 units/semester; • a minimum of 6 units to qualify for financial aid.

Class Schedule of Hours • Classes: • Evenings -> Mon – Thurs, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.; • Afternoon -> Mon – Thurs, 12:30-4:30pm, (trial basis). • Each course meets 1-2 times per week. • Clinical experiences: • Saturdays/Sundays, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. • Occasionally on Fridays, depending on course.

  23. BACKGROUND CHECK • Mandatory prior to clinical placement • 1st semester: process will be coordinated by the program • Any concerns must addressed BEFORE beginning the program.

  27. ADN Curriculum Plan • Total program: 10, 8-wk sessions • A total of 80 units required • As outlined in the college catalog

  28. What is the schedule like? • Two 8-week sessions/semester • 8-week summer session • Fall semester -late August to December • Spring semester -January to May • Summer session- mid-May to mid-July.

  30. Clinical Requirements Nursing = an educational program • which includes a clinical component, i.e., “hands on” requirement. • Cultural competence • An appreciation for the common good

Clinical Site Assignment • Carpooling is strongly encouraged • A reliable car is a must to get to the hospital. • Proximity from home to clinical site although considered is not a priority in assignments. • The responsibilities simulate employment. • No make-up for absenteeism, which may result in withdrawing from course and may alter graduation date.

  32. Health Clearance • Students are responsible for insure that the their records are annually updated: • Physical exam, lab work • TB testing—2-step • Titers & immunizations: Hep B, Varicella & MMR • Malpractice Insurance • CPR

  33. RANDOM DRUG TESTING Clinical facilities may require random drug testing of students • Failure to comply or a positive will result in exclusion from clinical • Exclusion from clinical results in failure or withdrawal from the program

  34. Medication Math Calculation Exam • 100% required EVERY nursing course with a clinical • 2 chances allowed • If failed, the course must be dropped. • This will delay the completion date of the program.

LVN Mobility Option Degree Option: • Must complete 36 units of GE requirements • Must notify the program in writing of intent to challenge for credit with the NLN exam. • Pass NLN Mobility Test to receive 15 units of nursing credits for Med.-Surg Nursing PRIOR to starting the program • Cost: is $80 (subject to change).

  36. 30 Unit Option - LVNs Non-Degree Option: • Allows NCLEX-RN exam after completing 28 units of required courses. • NOTE: • May not be endorsed by other states • May limit opportunities for career advancement • Does not receive a degree from MSMC

  40. What is Federal Financial Aid vs. Alternative Financing? FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID: 1) Federal Stafford Loans -subsidized/unsubsidized 2) Pell Grants (If eligible) 3) California Grants(if eligible) Note: Federal Financial Aid does guarantee to cover your full tuition and fees for any given academic year.

  42. Applying for Federal Financial Aid: Go to www.FAFSA.ED.GOV • Apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) • Complete the 2009-10 Application. (Deadline for 2009-10 academic year is June 30th, 2010) • Enter MSMC School Code – 001243 Note: 1-2 weeks electronic process time

Federal Grant Information: Pell Grants • Based on “Federal Need” as determined by the Federal Government • Amount received, if eligible, is based on enrollment status. • May receive Up to $4731, per academic year. Note: Student’s that have obtained an undergraduate degree or higher, are ineligible. California Grants • Based on “Federal Need” and GPA as determined by California Aid Commission. • GPA Verification Form must be submitted by March 2nd 2009 • GPA Verification form can be downloaded at: http://www.csac.ca.gov submit to Registrars Office before March 2nd 2009 deadline • May receive Up to $9,700 per academic year depending on the Cal-grant you qualify for.

  45. Stafford Loans Guaranteed & Deferrable • Must meet Federal Requirements (for details visit www.fafsa.ed.gov ) • Previous Stafford Loans, if applicable, must be in current status. Your loan may not be in default status. • Loans are deferred until 6 month after your last day of class (graduating day). • Current Interest rate is 6.8%

Choose a lender (i.e. “Sallie Mae Signature loan”) • You may apply with a Co Borrower • Credit Based Loan • Interest rate is based upon credit approval. Contact the lender of choice for information regarding interest rates. NOTE: You have the option of applying with an outside lender not listed on our website.
