  1. Exhibition Research Paper-Career Monroe Middle School

  2. Part 1-What did you expect to learn? • Do not begin with the pronoun “I”. • Start with a hook, such as a quote from someone famous within the career of your choice, a short success story about the career, a short story about why you chose the career. • Explain what you expected to learn about the career you chose to research, and why it interested you in the first place.

  3. Sample Elementary School Teacher One million five hundred forty four thousand three hundred (1,544,300) individuals are making a difference as we speak. Yes, 1,544,300 people are making a difference. How you may ask? Well… all those people are the number of elementary school teachers. When I began my research, there were many things I hoped to learn. For instance, I wanted to understand what it is that teachers do on a daily basis. We all see them teaching, and know that they have to grade our work, but what else is involved? What does it mean to create a lesson, how do you know what score to give a student? I also hoped to find out what type of lifestyle you could live on a teacher’s salary. I wanted to know where I would be able to live, if I would make enough money, and overall how much I would have to spend. This career interested me for many reasons. One reason why this career interested me was because I’ve always wondered what teachers have to do to be successful at their job. In addition, I really find it interesting to work with kids; because they are still small and they have so many things that they have to learn about. Elementary school teachers make a big difference in a child’s life.

  4. Part 2-What responsibilities are required from the career? • Describe the types of jobs within the career-explain the responsibilities of three of the other jobs. • Be sure to be equally descriptive with each job.

  5. Sample Teachers have many responsibilities. Teachers have the responsibility to lead students toward fulfillment for their potential physiological, social, emotional, and most importantly intellectual growth (Richmond.k12). Teachers also assist in setting and maintaining standards of classroom behavior. Additionally teachers also have the responsibility of evaluating student progress on a regular basis (Richmond.k12). Maintaining complete and accurate records, assigning reasonable tasks, and being available to parents for conferences are just a few responsibilities of an elementary school teacher (ware.k12). Other duties are to have lesson plans as required by school policy, conducting lessons at assigned times (ware.k12). Teachers attend and participate in faculty meetings, as well as professional meetings (Richmond.k12). Teachers comply with and enforce school rules, as well as conditions of the state in contract (ware.k12). As you can already tell by now teachers have a lot that they have to deal with. Being an elementary school teacher does require a lot of work. But it’s worth it when you get the good feeling that you are doing a good deed. Also, if you have fun doing your job, then it doesn’t feel like a lot of work because you are having fun doing it.

  6. Teachers not only need to have motivation, dedication, and creativity; teachers also need to have skills in order to succeed at their job. Not only do teachers need to help their students to be successful they need to improve themselves too. Teachers need a bachelor’s degree. Teachers need to complete their teacher competency examinations. Also, taking criticism without being offended is very important. The reason why it is important is because parents might go and can complain that their child isn’t getting taught well or that they are mean. If teachers can take criticism well then they can ignore it and not get mad. Additionally teachers also need to continually practice developing curriculum, and modify materials so that they will be more efficient (teacher-world.com). It’s nice how teachers are life-long learners, because they need to improve themselves too. Teachers do have to have a flexible schedule because they are always doing all sorts of things. Such as grading, planning classes, and going to meetings. Sometimes teachers have to stay afterschool and help students that need help.

  7. Part 3-Finances, job outlook, promotional opportunities • Describe the financial cost of living in the area. See the cost of rent in the area on the next slide.

  9. Sample Next, we will look at the average teacher’s salary. Well the average salary for a teacher in 2009 was between 50,000 and 53,000 dollars a year. However in California, the average yearly salary for a teacher was 61,230 dollars a year in 2009. Out of 1,544,300 people that are teachers at least 99% make 37,760 dollars a year. 75% at least earn 46,450 dollars per year, 50% of teachers earn 60,110 dollars a year or more. 25% of teachers earn at least 75,150 dollars per year; meanwhile only 10% of teachers make 87,500 dollars per year (MyPlan.com). For promotion opportunities teachers can move into administrator positions that would be done through a merit process. Administrator positions can be principals or vice principals (det.wa). Unlike other careers elementary school teachers get winter break, spring break, and holidays, because kids aren’t in school. The only down fall to that is that there are days that teachers have to go to work, and meetings and grading is also more work. About a month before school starts, you can already start seeing teacher’s cars. They are there by that time because they basically are organizing and planning for the school year.

  10. Sample There were at least 1.5 million people that were teachers in 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (education-portal.com).Employment is estimated to increase by 10% to 16% in 2018. That’s going from 1,544,300 to 1,793,700 jobs in 2018, so that’s a big increase. According to statistics, nearly half of all teachers were over the age of 45 in 2006. So there will be more jobs available because of the retirement of teachers. It will be easier to find jobs in inner cities rather than suburban districts. And student enrollment will increase mostly in the South and West part of the U.S. (campusexplorer.com). It’s good to know that there will be more job opportunities for teachers, because there are so many people that want to be an elementary school teacher. Just knowing that there will be more job opportunities for teachers, means that more kids will get to have an education. Also, it means that more people will be successful in life because they are going to go to school and more adults will be successful in life, for they are getting an education.

  11. Sample • After analyzing the average income and average rent for the Santa Clara area, I found that I could afford to spend around $1,000-$1200 in rent. This is worrisome because the average rent costs around $1600 dollars. This means that I would have to limit my spending, since I would still have to pay for bills. This also means that in order to pay my monthly rent comfortably, I might have to have a roommate. It is a livable wage, but it does show that my options of where I can live will be limited. It also means that I might have less money to spend on things like shopping, going out with friends, or traveling. At first, I thought this sounded like a lot of money, but now seeing how much it will cost to live here, I see that is not as much money as I originally thought.

  12. Part 4- Education and training that is required of this career • What degrees are required? • What certifications or training are required? • How many years do you have to be educated, train, or be prepared for the career of your choice?

  13. Sample Becoming an elementary school teacher requires many years of dedication and education. To become an elementary school teacher, you need a bachelors degree and one to two years to get a teaching credential. So in total you have five to six years of education (Ms. Hull). To be an elementary school teacher early childhood, elementary, and high school certification is required. Additionally you need to complete some sort of continuing education to renew your teaching licenses. There are specific requirements that vary by state to become an elementary school teacher. But all states in the U.S. do require a bachelors degree. All states require elementary school teachers to be certified through each states own process (education-portal.com). Being an elementary school teacher does require many years of education, but it’s worth it in the end because you get to pursue the career that you always wanted to work in. It’s actually really surprising how elementary school teachers only go to school for five to six years, in comparison to other careers that require twice as much years of education. Since elementary school teachers usually teach most subjects to their students they are required to take pre-major courses. Some pre-major are be children literature, language arts, math, art, and music. There are also major education programs. Some of those advanced courses are math, science, and social studies. Elementary teaching programs train graduates to utilize technology in their classroom. Professional courses teach classroom management and teaching methods (education-portal.com). First off, that seems like so many courses and classes that are needed to become an elementary school teacher. Looking at it in a middle school student’s point of view it’s just like being in middle school, but for a longer time period. Because of all the classes that you have to take, algebra is like math, history is social studies, and so on.

  14. Part 5- Conclusion • Am I still interested in this career? Why or why not?

  15. Sample In conclusion, elementary school teachers have many responsibilities and are mostly responsible for children’s education because they help them with intellectual, social, psychological, and emotional growth. At first I picked this career out of curiosity. It wasn’t like “Oh, I want to be a teacher!” thing; but afterwards, as in now, I would definitely pursue this career. To me everything that I learned is important to me. From the salary, to the outlook; to the difference a teacher can make in the community, and in a child’s life. It is all important to me. I think that everything that I learned, I can take away from this project. I’m just really glad that I decided to do this career for my exhibition because it was very interesting and fun to learn about.
