  2. GENERAL CLASS INFORMATION • Students are required to be active and participate. • All assignments can be completed during class time. Homework is infrequent. • Student should check with teacher upon return from absence. • Parents should check Synergy frequently. • Parents and student should read blog. (Lassiterhigh.org, Academics, Career/Tech, scroll down to name and blog) • Assignments are posted at school on the student "U" drive. They can access and print any assignments from there, any time. • Email is the best form of correspondence.  I cannot discuss individual student concerns with you tonight but please email me with any concerns or questions at any time. • Ward.mitchell@cobbk12.org

  3. Program completer • Students completing 3 sequential course credit hours in engineering classes have the opportunity to become a program completer- called the End of Pathway completer. • At the completion of 3 credits student will take a state exam. If passed, student will get a Pathway Completer endorsement/seal on their diploma and in their record. • Student will wear a program completer pin or cord at graduation. • Student will be more competitive in college applications with the completer endorsement.

  4. Foundations of engineering- 1st year • Students are learning the basics of the engineering process, what engineers do in their jobs, the different fields of engineering and engage in multiple hands-on projects through individual and group effort. • Focus is on PBL(problem-based learning). • EDP(engineering design process) is used to develop solutions to teacher assigned problems. • Students are learning how to communicate technically and graphically. • Research is required for all PBL assignments. • All assignments can be completed in class.  • Extra time is given if student is on-task and trying to complete the assignment. • Please see the state course standards on the school website under “Engineering and Technology.”

  5. Concepts of engineering- 2nd year • Students start applying knowledge and previously learned foundation processes to their projects. • Emphasis is on thinking critically and creatively. • Students start using equipment and tools in the lab. • Students design and make projects on the 3D printer. • Students enhance 3D modeling and CAD skills. • Students enhance research skills and technical writing. • Please see the state course standards on the school website under “Engineering and Technology.”

  6. Engineering applications- 3rd year • Students are applying skills and concepts learned in 1st and 2nd year. • More self-design and self-directed projects are allowed. • Emphasis is placed on sequential processes for design, manufacturing, testing and data collection. • Students should have a good grasp of the EDP, engineering design process”, by now. • Student should make more inferences and use higher learning strategies for more and more complex problems. • Communication and presentation of concepts is reinforced. • Please see the state course standards on the school website under “Engineering and Technology.”

  7. Research and development- 4th year • Typically organized as an independent study course for senior students. • Compliments previous coursework. Prepares the student for college. • Students pick their own engineering topics to research. • Students submit their research to peers through presentation, display panel and model. • Projects are graded on depth of research, accuracy of display, interest in topic, complexity and design effort.
