  1. Consequences of Global climate Change

  2. Impact of Global Warming • Sea level rising • Altered precipitation pattern • Change in soil moisture content • Increase in some extreme weather • More flood more drought • Alteration of natural climate cycles like El Nino • Changes in the species ranges • Changes in the ocean circulation • Melting of Arctic permafrost

  3. 1.Extreme temperature events • Increase in number of abnormally hot days • Higher maximum temperature • Most land areas can expect fewer exceptionally cold days • Longer frost-free growing seasons

  4. 2. Sea level Rise • Three thousand years ago the rate was 0.1 to 0.2 mm per year • But by the twentieth century sea level was rising ten times faster at 1- 2 mm per year. • Future sea level • Projection of SLR for 21 st century ranges from 20 cm to 60 cm. (8 inch to 24 inch) • A1B scenario suggests a best estimate for SLR in 21st century 35 cm – (14 inch)

  5. Contribution to Sea level Rising(SLR) • Melting land base ice • Thermal expansion of water due to increase in the temperature. • Melting permafrost (deposition of the sediments by river flows and human alteration of hydro cycle. • Note: Floating ice will not change the SL.

  6. 3. Change in Hydrologic Cycle and Weather • Warming increases the evaporation and therefore causes more intense hydrologic cycle • More precipitation : this is not evenly distributed. Drier areas seeing substantial decline. • Precipitation and river flows are expected to increase at high latitude and some parts of the tropics. But decreasing over the mid-latitudes and dry tropical regions. • Increase flooding in some places increase drought in some places especially in continental interior. • Increase in the intense of the Tropical storms
