  8. America Eyes Hawaii 1.) Economic Interests -sugar, pineapple 2.) Naval base -to protect West Coast -place to refuel for trip to Asia 3.) To compete with other imperialistic countries

  9. -Hawaii had a monarchy -King Kalakaua -Sugar industry grows -plantation owners become more wealthy; want more power in politics; wanted Hawaii to adopt democracy -most plantation owners were Americans -Hawaiian League -Bayonet Contsitution hawaii

  10. -U.S. revokes sugar treaty -Plantation owners consider annexation to save their businesses -forced Queen Liliuokalani to relinquish rule -established Republic of Hawaii -negotiations with the U.S. for annexation -President Cleveland refuses Annexation of hawaii
