  2. Circuits • A circuit is a continuous path through which charge flows. • If the circuit is opened in even one place, the flow of electric charge stops.

Circuits • A battery is used as a source of electric charge. • It has two terminals, positive and negative. • Inside a battery • a chemical reaction separates charges. • Electrons build up at one terminal, giving it a negative charge. The other terminal has fewer electrons, so it has a positive charge. • In a closed electric circuit, the charges flow from the negative terminal through the wire to the positive terminal

  4. Circuits • The wires conduct the electric charge. This makes a continuous path along which the charge flows. • A switch controls a circuit, by opening or closing it. • In a home, school or business, the source of electric current is the generating plant, delivered through wires to a wall socket.

  5. Series Circuits • A series circuit is a circuit, in which there is one path for the current to follow. • The devices in a circuit are called resistors that resist the flow of charges. • If any part of a series circuit fails, the entire circuit fails.

  6. Parallel Circuits • In parallel circuit, devices are connected along separate paths. • If something stops electrons from moving along one path, they can take another path. • When one part of the parallel circuit fails, other parts of the circuit continue to work, so it’s easier to repair. • Also parallel circuits can have separate switches in them.

  7. Electromagnet • Electromagnet is a temporary magnet made by passing an electric current through a coil of wire that surrounds an iron core. • The more loops there in the coil, the stronger the magnetic field. • When the circuit is closed the electromagnet attracts objects that contain iron, steel, or nickel. • It can be turned off when it is not needed.
