  4. Jan. 7, 2009, cont. • "Magical Negro" parody - Look up and research. An "Uncle Tom" term.- Rush Limbaugh did a song with it. "Barrack the Magical Negro."~ Why was he allowed to get away with it?- Saltsman, Candidate for chairman of the "Republican National Committee" sends the song out in a Christmas letter.~ You Tube Video - GOP song controversy.- Is this an issue of hypersensitivity? Research this on your own.~ You Tube Video - Republican Leader - "Barrack The Magical Negro.” • David Horsey - Obama political cartoons. "The message some McCain supporters believe…" compared to the Obama Muslim New Yorker cover.~ What can we poke fun at? ~ All these things as a whole, what is appropriate?To Do: Look up and research the Obama "Magical Negro" parody. Is this an issue of hypersensitivity? Research and bring in your thoughts. Bring in an example of other coverage issues.

  10. Notes from 1/14 • Amy Thompson • There is more broad coverage and a sense of unity in black media; more of a sense of community. Commonly using the pronouns "we" or "us" in their coverage. • ‑ The questions of how it is that objectivity is accomplished. What would count as being objective. • ‑ The news coverage differences in Oscar Grant III case. What parts of the story do and do not get published and in what light. • ‑ Agenda setting: the levels of importance between black and white based media • ‑ How it seems that there is an underlying sense of fear when confronted with differences • ‑ With the advancement of technology today there is more scrutiny and challenging of the media.
