  6. Realising Opportunities • Collaboration of 12 Universities • University of Birmingham • University of Bristol • University of Essex • University of Exeter • Kings College London • University of Leeds • University of Leicester • University of Liverpool • University of Manchester • Newcastle University • University of Warwick • University of York • Project supports students with their skills development – starts in year 12 • Library provide an information skills workshop for visiting students • Currently creating a new video • Brief postgraduate tutors who act as mentors

  7. PC Classroom or seminar room? Early workshops based in PC classroom • Allows hands on search experience • Limited access to resources • Difficult to retain student’s attention • Hard for ambassadors to get involved • Makes group work harder Image: Stephane Venne. • More recently in Seminar rooms • - Encourages more discussion • - Easier to facilitate group activities – ambassador involvement • - However, students do not get hands on experience

  8. Creating new activities (1) Sessions needed greater interactivity Would encourage ambassador involvement Less talking through slides, more students talking to each other Laminated A5 sheets instead of working on PCs

  9. Creating new activities (2) Introduction of video Cards to create own search strategy – Practical activities Hot Seat to assess what students had learned – with Prize! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa66AxTbjxA&feature=related

  10. Challenges Balancing with ‘business as usual’ Need to be an ‘all rounder’ when it comes to helping with enquiries! Working with diverse age range of students (from 10 – 17!) Often lack of clear learning objectives from school/college or indication of what students already know Maintaining discipline….. Image: Lim CK

  11. Top tips! Use your student ambassadors! Try to ensure there is a clear understandingbetween yourself and the school/college about what they would like you to provide Try to keep the sessions as interactiveas possible Keep the groups small if at all possible Image: Familymwr

  12. Where are we now? Widening Participation functional area – one of five functional areas Indicates the Library’s commitment to WP Co-ordinated by Clare Ackerley Science cluster! Sharing the workload 3 other members of staff as well as core team

  13. The future? Greater emphasis on online support • Articulate tutorials • More videos (Hopefully!)Involvement of a greater number of Liaison Librarians • Sharing the workload to deal with increasing demand Possibly invite content and customer services to help facilitate events in future
