Appendices: Not A Useless Paper Stack • Determine if Appendices Permissible • Put Appendices in Required Order • Title Each Appendix on Divider Pages • Typical Appendices/Attachments • Board of Directors & Affiliations • Documentation of Non-Profit/Gov’t Status • Letters of Commitment/Support • Key Staff Vitae or Job Descriptions • Required Forms (Project Budget, Assurances) • Agency Budget • Newsletters/articles about applicant

General Online App Suggestions • Register as far ahead as possible • Use MS Word to draft section responses • Determine number of characters: • Highlight passage • Go to Tools-Word count and see # Characters • Cut to fit character limits • Determine if you can save drafts: • If yes, gradually complete proposal; saving often • If no, complete in one sitting • Upload as far ahead of deadline as possible • Print copy for your files

Sow Before You Reap: Building Awareness of your Organization • Identify potential funders & program officer name • Contact program officer to introduce self, ask for meeting to learn about their priorities • Determine hard copy or email version • Ask if you can send newsletter/periodic updates • Cover note indicates what is attached, gives contact info if they do not wish to be on mailing list • Invite funder to events at your agency • Ask if you can contact with ideas down the road

Inquiry Letters: Testing the Waters • Send to Program Officer • Letter consists of: • Reference to past contact (letter, event, meeting) • Brief description of project idea • Request to discuss project idea • Brief brochure/news clipping abut agency or project idea • An easy way to contact you • An indication you will call to set appointment • Follow-up Call to set appointment

Inquiry Meeting • Develop your 1-2 page prospectus discussed in Week 4 • Discuss elements of your prospectus • Problem/Reasons • Brief description of project elements • Cost parameters • Ask if project idea fits funder priorities • Ask for feedback on concerns/strengths • Ask if you should submit proposal—will s/he give you feedback on drafts?
