  5. WHAT CHANGES?? • Many changes in Physical, Cognitive (thinking processes) and Social/Emotional PHYSICAL • Body Changes! (muscle mass, strength, weight) … need more food and sleep! • Concern about appearance • Personal hygiene & nutrition

  6. WHAT CHANGES? COGNITIVE • Preteen concrete thinkers • Maturity = understanding complex issues, even when they don’t agree • YOU MAY SEE MORE ARGUING – RATIONALIZING THEIR NEEDS (new phone, curfew etc.) • Arguing becomes more sophisticated – wears you down! • Abstract thinking (can see their future …)

  7. WHAT CHANGES?? SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL • Same hormones bring on emotional changes (mood swings …) • Acceptance – peer relationships (fitting in) • FRIENDS! (May choose friends over parents for confiding in, solving problems etc.) • Moving towards independence

  8. WHAT TO EXPECT IN MIDDLE SCHOOL - PARENTS • Your “puppies” turn into “cats” … • Toddlers and Teens – one and the same??

  9. THIS IS A GREAT TRANSITION • Be gentle with yourself. • Be gentle with your child. • Choose your battles wisely. • Maintain your sense of humor!

WHAT CAN PARENTS DO TO HELP THEIR MIDDLE SCHOOLER BE SUCCESSFUL? • Attend important events - like “Back to School Night”. • Understand your child’s schedule & classes. • Know each teacher’s expectations. • Check teachers’ websites for HW, messages and grades. • Contact teachers first with questions about expectations, problems, or for extra help. • Check your child’s organizer nightly and check HW for completion. • Monitor your child’s grades on Zangle.

  20. This student has put her uniform over her school clothes. This is not allowed. These students are wearing flip flops to class. This is not allowed.

  21. WHAT HURTS MY PE GRADE? Each non-dress costs my grade 4 points Wearing other people’s clothes is a non-dress Each missed mile costs my grade 4 points Each non-participation costs my grade 4 points Each misbehavior can cost my grade 5 points Each absence or tardy can cost my grade 1 point Chewing gum, candy or food can cost 3 points

  22. LOCKER ROOM Each student is issued their own small locker. Do not share lockers or combinations with other students

  23. LOCKER ROOM Each student may use the big locker during Physical Education class only.

  24. LOCKER ROOM What goes in the big locker? • Your backpack may not fit, but your valuables will. • All valuables: Laptop, wallet, phone, ipod, keys, money, jewelry, lunch, drinks, etc…

  28. LAPTOP PROGRAM LAPTOP students will be scheduled into laptop classes for: 1. Language Arts/History Block 2. Science LAPTOP Parent Meeting on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the MPR

  29. SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM • Students who are currently in Special Education at their elementary school, will continue to receive services, as specified in their current IEP. • Recommendations will be made by their current case-manager for placement in appropriate classes at the middle school.

  30. IMPORTANT DATES & EVENTS • WEB (Welcome EveryBody) new student orientation & Registration - in August • Scheduling forms are due back Tuesday, January 31st, 2012 to your child’s 5th grade teacher.

  31. Students entering 6th – 12th grade will need proof of a Tdap Booster (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) before starting school.Check district WEBSITE for more information. IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFO

OPEN ENROLLMENT • If you have Open Enrolled (OE) to Harvest Park from your child’s elementary school … Scheduling paperwork should be completed for the middle school for which your child is zoned; and turned into their 5th grade teacher. Once OE’s are approved, your child’s information will be sent to Harvest Park from their elementary school.
