  2. Warm-up • From last class meeting, explain the concept of Critical Thinking. • From last class meeting, cite at least two rules for this class (without looking at your notes). 3. What does the term “deferred” mean: • To Enjoy something • To have something delayed—maybe forever • To wait for something joyfully • None of these 4. What does learning to read and write at the college-level have to do with Personal Achievement? Hint: How will it affect you as you apply for work or to colleges?

What does The Culture of Achievement have to do with English? • Multiple Intelligences…everyone can enjoy reading and writing; writing and reading are skills • Achievement: you must know how to communicate your great ideas! • To improve your writing, you must WRITE • To improve your reading, you must READ—daily

  4. Terms to Know (hint—on the test): • Analysis • Critical Thinking • Multiple Intelligences • Evidence/Support • Deep Reading/Comprehension

  5. Analysis • What is it? (Define it in your notes) • Methods—Deep Reading • Take on a Poem!

  6. Langston Hughes: A Dream Deferred What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode?

  9. Evidence/Support? • Evidence refers to specific details from the text that give your answer credibility (what is credibility? ) • Support gives your ideas “a leg to stand on” • Without support, your answers (no matter how correct) cannot be taken seriously in the world of English analysis

  10. Final/Exit Ticket • Complete 1 through 12 in the text • Submit your pair-share analysis of “A Dream Deferred” • Submit your Warm-up

  11. Narrative Start • First person • Think of a time when something or someone wasn’t what you first thought them to be • What happened? What did you think of them when you first encountered them? How did that change? • Write two paragraphs on this; it can be rough (pre-writing)

(what are those?) • What is the ACT? Why is it important to practice the skill of test-taking? • What is a “diagnostic”?If you do not know, talk (softly) with a neighbor about this term. • Why do we take a diagnostic in an English class like this one?
