  2. The Eucaland Project deals with the Agricultural Landscapes of Europe for promoting their consideration and use among their people and for preserving their cultural heritage The project, prepared and proposed by CCLP, has been granted by the EC Culture Programme 2007 to the Department of Geopgraphy,University of Cambridge, and is coordinated by Dr Gloria Pungetti Project Goal - describe the agricultural landscapes from past to present, in view of a common debate and classification, with the final goal to reach general recommendations on alternative ways to deal with our future agricultural landscapes, more culturally and sustainable oriented, addressed not only to scientists and planners, but also to policy makers and especially to the people of Europe Romanian role- Associated funding partner (Key partner)- WP 3 10-oct-2008 SEMINAR DIMENSIUNILE SOCIO-ECONOMICE ŞI CULTURALE ALE PEISAJELOR AGRARE – ELEMENTE DE BAZĂ ALE IDENTITĂŢII RURALE

  4. - treatment of the scale issues (assuming aim is a pan-European classification) - issues of legibility - the distinction between this classification and exiting similar ones (eg landscape character assessment or other types of landscape mapping); - the range of factors incorporated in the classification; - making cultural factors more visible, the weight to give environmental constraints, land-cover or land-use; - our attitude towards the concept ‘traditional’ and how to take account of ‘time-depth’; - our stance towards peri-urban, urban fringe, suburbanised agricultural landscape types; - the degree to which the classification needs to be / has been validated by detailed testing during the project. - the role of past and current agricultural activity in shaping many of Europe’s most distinctive landscape types in order to inform and shape future management and planning of the diversity of European landscape - provide a framework for producing national and pan-European characterisation and maps of Europe’s agricultural landscapes, ie to guide the collection of material and information about different agricultural landscape types in Europe - produce a prototype exemplar of using the classification to identify future (continuing or new) directions for the management and evolution of European agricultural landscapes - setting out in very basic terms how we envisage the classification to be used in the context of the ELC and in reaction to EU agricultural policy, eg to evaluate and assess the different types of agricultural landscapes in Europe and to contribute towards guiding future change WP 3 Classifying Agricultural Landscape – Initial Objectives 10-oct-2008 SEMINAR DIMENSIUNILE SOCIO-ECONOMICE ŞI CULTURALE ALE PEISAJELOR AGRARE – ELEMENTE DE BAZĂ ALE IDENTITĂŢII RURALE

  5. Goals Produce a classification of areas of landscape (in the ELC definition) that are significantly influenced by past and present agricultural and related activities. This will take account (for example) of territorial structures, settlement patterns, inherited structure, farming types, farmstead form etc. It will be designed to operate at supra-national scale and to emphasise cultural over environmental factors. Methods - Examine existing classifications / methods - Model- not data-led - Types not areas, but small scale - Establish factors/criteria - Create draft new classification - Collect relevant data - Test classification in sample areas - Apply classification to make European map - Report / book chapter WP 3 Classifying Agricultural Landscape – Intermediary ideas 10-oct-2008 SEMINAR DIMENSIUNILE SOCIO-ECONOMICE ŞI CULTURALE ALE PEISAJELOR AGRARE – ELEMENTE DE BAZĂ ALE IDENTITĂŢII RURALE

  6. Stage 1: Structure – Classes, Attributes and Types Stage 2: Define attributes Stage 3: Create types from attributes (a judgement-led, iterative, interpretative process) Stage 4: Write Type descriptions Stage 5: Illustrate Types, photos / diagrams Stage 6: make a map Classifying Agricultural Landscape – WP status 10-oct-2008 SEMINAR DIMENSIUNILE SOCIO-ECONOMICE ŞI CULTURALE ALE PEISAJELOR AGRARE – ELEMENTE DE BAZĂ ALE IDENTITĂŢII RURALE
