  1. VAM to MAF Conversion By: Dustin Roelle William Zurbrick

  2. Key Terms • VAM – Volume Air Flow Meter • MAF – Mass Air Flow Meter • ECU – Engine Control Unit • DAC – Digital to Analog Converter • ADC – Analog to Digital Converter • EPROM – Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory • CMH – Cubic Meters per Hour

  3. Schematic Diagram of a VAM

  4. Schematic Diagram of a MAF

  5. Motivations • To convert a 1991 BMW 318iS and 1987 Merkur XR4Ti from a vane-style air meter to a modern mass-flow measuring system.

  6. Project Objectives • Develop a product that can be sold for profit. • Design a system to convert, and condition as necessary, the signal from a MAF sensor to the equivalent one from a VAM sensor at given flow conditions.

  7. Objectives (cont.) • To Measure Air Flow with a MAF on previously VAM-equipped engines. • Take MAF output, and digitally convert output values to equivalent ones from VAM. • Improve throttle response • Improve power production • Improve fuel economy
