  2. Bihar Election Results: BJP-JD(U) alliance sweeps Bihar, gets 39 of the 40 seats The BJP-led NDA won a thumping victory in Bihar getting 39 of the 40 Lok Sabha seats. RJD, the main opposition party in Bihar, drew a blank Congress managed to get a lone seat. Its candidate from Kishanganj constituency Dr. Mohammad Jawed won with a margin of 34,466 votes.

  7. Bihar gets Centre's nod for Kosi-Mechi river interlinking The Centre has approved the Rs 4,900 crore project for interlinking of Kosi and Mechi rivers of Bihar. This is the second major river interlinking project in the country to be approved after the Ken-Betwa project in Madhya Pradesh. Kosi river is a tributary of Ganga river and Mechi river tributary of Mahananda river.

  8. About Kosi-Mechi Interlinking project It envisages diversion of part of surplus water of Kosi river through existing Hanuman Nagar barrage to Mechi River of Mahananda basin. The central government has approved construction of 76.20 km canals on eastern bank of Kosi for irrigation purpose.

  9. Benefits: project will not only prevent recurring floods in north Bihar, but also irrigate over 2.14 lakh hectares of cultivable land in Araria, Purnea, Kishanganj and Katihar districts, collectively called Seemanchal region Area required: The total land requirement is about 1,396.81 hectares. There are no national parks, wildlife sanctuaries or eco-sensitive zones within 10 km radius of the project. Bihar is pitching the river interlinking project for the "national project" status and in that case the majority funding of the project will be borne by the Centre.

  10. 5th Dharma-Dhamma conference was held on July 27-28 in Rajgir Inaugurated by : Union Minister of State Kiren Rijiju. Guest of Honor: Sri Lanka's Home Minister Gamini Jaiwickrama Perera, Bhutan's Home and Culture Minister Lyonpo Sherub Gyeltshen and Juna Akhada's Awadheshananda Giri Ji Maharaj.

  11. Participants: Almost 250 scholars and delegates from over 15 countries participated in Conference. Organised by: Nalanda University (NU) in collaboration with New Delhi’s Centre for Study of Religion and Society-India Foundation (CSRS-IF). Objective: The main purpose of this conference is to address people about the terror, violence and global warming prevalent in the world. It also address the subjects of Sat-Chit-Ananda and Nirvana which are the pivotal topics of Buddhism

  13. Gogabeel is Bihar's first community reserve Gogabeel, an ox-bow lake in Bihar’s Katihar district, has been declared as the state’s first ‘Community Reserve’. The water body was notified as a 57 hectare Community Reserve and a 30 hectare ‘Conservation Reserve’ on August 2, 2019 by Deepak Kumar, principal secretary, department of environment, forest and climate change, Bihar.

  14. Gogabeel Gogabeel is formed from the flow of the rivers Mahananda and Kankhar in the north and the Ganga in the south and east. It is the fifteenth Protected Area (PA) in Bihar. An oxbow lake is a crescent-shaped lake lying alongside a winding river. The oxbow lake is created over time as erosion and deposits of soil change the river’s course. Gogabeel is a permanent waterbody, although it shrinks to some extent in the summer but never dries completely. More than 90 bird species have been recorded from this site, of which, about 30 are migratory.

  16. Bihar bans tree-felling The Government of Bihar recently banned felling of trees, citing increasing pollution as well as a fatal heatwave. Trees on private land, however, can be felled in the absence of a tree-protection Act in Bihar. The current order against banning tree felling was passed under Forest Conservation Act (FCA),1980. This new scheme is valid only for State Government and not for people who privately own a tree.

  17. Background: Bihar Government has taken this decision as most cities of Bihar are ranked in list of World’s most polluted cities which includes- Patna (7th position), Muzaffarpur (13th position), Gaya (18th position) and Bhagalpur. “Another reason was the severe heatwave, which killed 90 people in Gaya, Aurangabad and Nawada districts besides rendering many others sick. The government’s decision could have been a reaction to the indiscriminate felling of big, old trees in Capital Patna during the last few years for the construction of roads and buildings

  18. Changes Anybody who would now want to remove a tree for any development project would have to translocate it. Engineers have been asked not to cut trees while building or expanding roads. The forest department has also expressed its displeasure over filling roots of trees with concrete on roads in various towns. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has repeatedly announced that his government will increase green cover in the state to 17 per cent. Till now, Bihar has been able to increase its green cover from seven to 15 per cent under the Green Mission.

  19. Mukhyamantri Vriddha Pension Yojna Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has launched the Mukhyamantri Vriddha Pension Yojna for poor people above 60 years of age in the state Under the scheme :  Poor people above 60 years of age will get Rs 400 per month and those above 80 years will get Rs 500 per month.  The scheme, which was effective from April 1, 2019, will not cover retired government employees.

  20.  The state government had created a special fund of Rs 18,000 crore for the scheme which "will give the elderly poor respect and dignity”

  21. 107th Bihar Diwas Bihar Diwas was celebrated on March 22nd across the state to commemorate the day when Bihar was carved out of the Bengal Presidency in the year 1912. March 22nd 2019 was the 107th foundation day of the state. Bihar Diwas was first celebrated on a large-scale in 2010. Bihar Diwas was the brainchild of then chief minister Nitish Kumar.

Cabinet approves investment approval for 1320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project in Bihar The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given its approval for investment approval for 2x660 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project (Buxar TPP) in District Buxar of Bihar. The project will be completed at an estimated cost of Rs. 10,439.09 crore and implemented by SJVN Thermal Private Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN Ltd., a Mini Ratna CPSU under Ministry of Power, Government of India. Government of Bihar has already signed Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for supply of not less than 85% of generated power.

  23. In a first, Bihar gets a dog squad to unleash on liquor smugglers Bihar has become the first state in the country to have raised a special dog squad to detect liquor consignment. To begin with, 20 canines have been included in the squad after nine months of basic training in Hyderabad on liquor sniffing skills and deployed in each of the nine police ranges in the state. There is a requirement of around 200 well-trained dogs in Bihar for crime detection, investigation and security.

  24. 3-day Krishi Kumbh Mela The three day long Krishi Kumbh Mela was inaugurated in Motihari, Bihar. The main objective of the event is promoting modern techniques and diversification in agriculture to help in doubling farmer’s income. Government is creating strong infrastructure from “Beej to Bazar” for enhancing the farmer’s income.

  25. 352nd Prakash Parv celebrations of Guru Gobind Singh commence Celebrations for the 352nd Prakash Parv (birth anniversary) of Guru Gobind Singh commenced at the Takht Harmandir Patna Sahib in Bihar, the place of birth of the tenth Sikh Guru. Guru Govind Singh ji was the creator of Khalsa Panth. The 10th Sikh Guru was a spiritual leader, philosopher, poet and master warrior. He is considered as the eternal guru by his followers because of his contribution to Sikhism.

  27. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has released a commemorative coin of Rs 350 to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh, the ten preachers of the Sikh religion.

Bihar govt. to give ₹1.5 lakh to transgenders for sex change operation The Bihar government has said that it would provide money to transgender members who opt for sex change operations and also jail from six months to two years to those who refused to give them house on rents or violate their rights. If someone [from the transgender community] undergoes sex change operation, then the Bihar government would give ₹1.5 lakh”

  29. The newly formed Bihar Rajya Kinnar Kalyan Board (Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board) will also look into facilities being provided to the members of this community in other States. Bihar is the first State which has started organising an annual festival of the transgender community Kinnar Mahotsva and brought the members on a platform

PM’s Awards for Outstanding Contribution for Promotion & Development of Yoga 2019 announced Recipients are: Swami Rajarshi Muni of Life Mission, Gujarat Ms. Antonietta Rozzi of Italy, Bihar School of Yoga, Munger Japan Yoga Niketan, Japan The award is given for outstanding contribution for promotion and development of Yoga. The selection was done after considering 79 nominations received under different categories.

  31. On the occasion of the 2nd International Day of Yoga celebrations at Chandigarh, the Prime Minister had announced the institution of awards for the promotion and development of Yoga. The winners will be felicitated with of a Trophy, Certificate and a Cash Award of 25 lakh rupees each.

Larger States: Kerala(TOP) , Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra have emerged as the second and third best performers. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha were among the worst-performing states on the index
