  1. What is a Research Clinic? AIM: Research evidence for the effectiveness in clinical practice • Naturalistic Setting • Routine Outcomes Evaluation. • Adherence to the Approach monitored • Use of Standardised Measures

  2. Research Clinic at Metanoia Institute:2010/2011: Therapists • 67 therapists • TA 10.9% • Gestalt 12.8% • Person Centred 30.4% • Integrative Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology 32.5%

  3. Research Clinic at Metanoia Institute:2010/2011: Clients • Number: 321 • Gender: 72% • Ethnicity: 67% White British, Black 33.4% 16.25% Asian • Age: 82.17% 20-49; 15.29% over 50 1.27% under 20.

  4. Research Sample

  5. OUTCOMES:

  6. LENGTH OF THERAPY • Group 1

  7. OUTCOMES GROUP 1 GROUP 2

  8. EFFECTIVENESS • GROUP 1 Improvement rates are significant (P<0.01), large effect size on all scores • GROUP 2 Improvement rates overall are not significant • GROUP 3 Significance at P<0.05 was achieved for PHQ-9, GAD-7, Core 10 and WAI with large effect sizes.

  9. WHICH VARIABLES ACCOUNT FOR CHANGE? • Severity (Pre Scores) and WAI accounted for a significant proportion of the variation (P < 0.05) ( higher scores at the outset more change, better working alliance more change) • No difference between theoretical orientation and improvement • No difference between number of sessions and improvement for group 1

  10. Difficulties of Evaluation within the Practice Setting • Pre and Post measures were less useful in research and practice (BDI-II,CORE 34) • Differences between individual therapists could not be calculated • No data on lack of engagement with a therapist

  11. Emerging Questions and Implications for further research • What does effectiveness in practice mean about efficacy? • What is the optimum length of therapy? • How do we develop the conditions for the initial engagement in therapy?
