Why Intern or Co-op? • Allows you to get practical work experience • See the differences between school and work • Makes it easier to get a full-time offer • Allows you to expand/narrow your options • Learn invaluable skills • Presentation, time-management, leadership • Make $$$ during the school year

  3. Differences between internships & co-ops • Internships • Typically 10-13 weeks • Advantages: you don’t have to take off during the school year, you only commit to one term at once • Disadvantages: more competition to receive an internship than a co-op (most students look for internships), you have less time to learn about the company than with a co-op • Co-ops • Typically 3-6 months • Advantages: you learn a lot about the company, you can rotate to different functions each term • Disadvantages: you limit the amount of companies you can work for, you will push back your graduation because you must take off during the school year

  4. How to get an internship or co-op • Visit ECS (Engineering Career Services) • Office in Hitchcock Hall • http://career.eng.ohio-state.edu/index.php • Development Workshops (Interviewing 101, Business Etiquette) • Resume Review • Networking Opportunities • NSBE Company Social • SHPE Symposium • Conferences (NSBE, SHPE, WIE, etc.) • Company Information Sessions • USE MEP, Mentors, etc. for help
