  3. Located ~10 minutes from downtown Birmingham Acute care (internal medicine, intensive care, dialysis, cardiac, women’s health, etc) to both indigent and insured patients Large, private hospital with teaching component Baptist Princeton Medical Center

Baptist Princeton Medical Center • Medicine Rotations (Dr. Jessica Starr) • Rotations will involve taking care of the patients admitted to the general medicine house staff team. • Team includes an internal medicine attending physician and several internal medicine residents. • Daily activities: • Rounding with the general medicine team • Attending morning report and noon conference • Presenting patients • Leading topic discussions

  6. Baptist Princeton(Medicine Rotations—Dr. Jessica Starr) Objectives for the rotations: 1. To increase the student’s knowledge of commonly encountered internal medicine disease states and their appropriate pharmacotherapy. 2. To develop the clinical skills necessary to promote optimal and rational drug therapy of through a close working relationship with the internal medicine service. 3. To optimize communication skills to facilitate effective dialogue with patients and other health care professionals.

Carraway Community Care Clinic • Primary Care I, II, III (Dr. Kristi Kelley) • Located just north of downtown B’ham • Internal Medicine Resident Clinic • Pharmacy Services/Collaborative Practice • Anticoagulation Clinic • Diabetes Education Classes • Medication History/Patient Counseling • Socioeconomic review of medication list/medication assistance programs • General pharmacotherapy services

What to Expect(Primary Care —Dr. Kristi Kelley) • Daily interactions with patients and healthcare providers • Private internal medicine practice • Internal medicine residents/attendings • At leasttwo topic discussionsa week • Students are expected to keep track of their own patient interventions • Onein-service (nurses/staff) • Onepatient presentation or journal club • Teach diabetes education class • Write and edit clinic newsletter

The Kirklin Clinic – Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Clinic • Primary Care I, II, and III (Dr. Anne Marie Liles) • Located in the Medical Center District of downtown B’ham • Member of the UAB Health System • The Kirklin Clinic is a center for outpatient care • 700 physicians with 35 specialties • CKD Clinic is part of the Division of Nephrology within the Department of Medicine at UAB • Division of Nephrology was ranked 17th in the nation in the 2006 US News & WorldReport “Best Hospitals” issue

  12. The Kirklin Clinic – Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Clinic • Pharmacy Services • Chronic disease state management • Patient education • Patients include those in Stage 3 CKD and below • Students will work with nephrologists, nephrology fellows, and nurse practitioners

Other Required Rotations in Birmingham (Medicine)

Gadsden ~60 minutes from Birmingham Gadsden Regional Medical Center Elective Corporate Pharmacy Services—retail, mail order, PBM Community Goodyear Medical Clinic Community Anniston – Golden Springs Pharmacy ~60 minutes from Birmingham Heflin – Wright Drug Company ~90 minutes from Birmingham Rotations in Gadsden/Anniston Area
