  10. 1. What is global warming? Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation. Global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C between the start and the end of the 20th century.

  11. 2. The causes of global warming Natural causes: Man-made causes: --giving off CO2. --allowing methane to escape. *population— *cutting down trees— *a release of methane *the earth going through a cycle (周期) of climate change. pollution *burning fossil fuels *mining fossil fuels in need of more food and transportation unable to convert CO2 to oxygen

  12. 3. The effects of global warming • Polar ice caps melting • Economic consequences • Increased probability and intensity (强度)of droughts (干旱) and heat waves • 4. Warmer waters and more hurricanes • 5. Spread of disease 1 G 2 H 3 A 4 E 5 B 6 F 7 C 8 J 9 I 10 D

  13. ABOUT EARTH HOUR Earth Hour takes place on the last Saturday in March each year from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, starting in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. Global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the CN Tower in Toronto, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum(罗马圆形大剧场), all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.

  14. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to pledge (发誓 ) their support . Earth Hour has done a lot to raise awareness of climate change issues. But there’s more to it than switching off lights for one hour once a year. It’s all about giving people a voice on the future of our planet and working together to create a sustainable low carbon future for our planet.

  15. 4. The solutions of global warming *Heating (暖气) conservation *Electricity conservation *Water savings *Food and the fridge *Driving tips *Flying tips *At the office/ classroom

  16. Heating conservation *Draughts(气流) waste a lot of energy by losing heat. One quick and relatively cheap win is to put a brush, seal (密封条) or newspaper on your doors to prevent air escaping round the edges. Letterboxes and keyholes also lose heat and can be covered too. *In winter close your curtains at night to stop heat escaping.

  17. Electricity conservation *Buy A-rated electrical appliances (A级家电). *Electric tumble dryers (电动滚筒干衣机) use a huge amount of energy. If it is a nice day dry your clothes outside or even inside if it is not so nice. *Use solar powered lights.

  18. Water savings *Always use the correct size saucepan (锅子), and when heating water only use the amount you need. *When making a cup of tea, only boil the amount of water that you need. *Turn off the tap while cleaning your teeth. *Have a shower (淋浴) instead of a bath (盆浴), which uses far less energy and water.

  19. Food and the fridge *You should never put warm or hot food into the fridge as this will make the fridge work extra hard to try and keep it cold; always allow food to cool down first. *Eat less meat; producing 1 calorie of meat requires a lot more land and energy, compared to 1 calorie of vegetables.

  20. Driving tips *Cars are generally very energy inefficient and travelling by train, bus or bike is much better for the planet. If you can’t manage without a car, changing your driving habits can help reduce its greenhouse emissions (排放). *Find out how much your car produces with our car calculator (计算器). *If you're stuck in a jam, switch the engine off if you expect to be there for more than a minute or two. Cutting the engine will save fuel and reduce emissions. *Use air conditioning sparingly (有节制地) as it significantly increases fuel consumption.

  21. Flying tips *Many short haul flights (短途航班) can be replaced by other forms of public transport such as trains or buses. *When you have to fly, always consider if you can combine trips (组合人次). *It’s best to fly direct rather than stopping over, aeroplanes use a lot of fuel taking off and landing.

  22. At the office/ classroom *A lot of the things you can do are the same as you would do in your home, but if you are feeling adventurous, you can always have a go at persuading your boss to go green as well! *Only use the lights you need. Turn off lights in unused rooms. *Turn off your computer monitor when you leave the office at the end of the day. *Print double-sided. *Open up - if you have windows you can open, use them to intelligently save energy. *Can you share a lift to get to work? *Perhaps see if you can teleconference and work from home occasionally.

  23. There’s a place in your heartAnd I know that it is loveAnd this place could be much Brighter than tomorrowAnd if you really try You’ll find there’s no need to cryIn this place you’ll feelThere’s no hurt or sorrow There are ways to get there If you care enough for the livingMake a little spaceMake a better place ...Heal the worldMake it a better placeFor you and for meAnd the entire human raceThere are people dyingIf you care enough for the living Make it a better place For you and for meIf you want to know whyThere’s love that cannot lie Love is strong It only cares of joyful givingIf we try we shall seeIn this bliss we cannot feel Fear or dreadWe stop existing and start livingThe it feels that alwaysLove's enough for us growingSo make a better worldMake a better place ... Heal the worldMake it a better placeFor you and for meAnd the entire human raceThere are people dyingIf you care enough for the livingMake a better place for you and for meAnd the dream we were conceived inWill reveal a joyful faceAnd the world we once believed inWill shine again in graceThen why do we keep strangling life Wound this earth, crucify its soulThough it’s plain to seeThis world is heavenlyBe god’s glowWe could fly so highLet our spirits never dieIn my heart I feel you are all my brothers Create a world with no fearTogether we cry happy tearsSee the nations turn their swords into plowsharesWe could really get thereIf you cared enough for the livingMake a little spaceTo make a better place ...Heal the worldMake it a better placeFor you and for meAnd the entire human raceThere are people dying If you care neough for the livingMake a better place for you and for me...There are peple dyingIf you care enough for the livingMake a better place for you and for meYou and for me ...

  24. THANK YOU

  25. With the development of economy, more and more greenhouse gases are being discharged into the air. CO2 makes up about 70% of the greenhouse gases, which is considered to be one of the greatest causes of global warming. It has harmful effects, causing the sea level to rise and many natural disasters to strike.

  26. So we must take effective measures to save our planet. First, we should use more clean energy and less coal and oil. Second, we should go to work on foot or by bus instead of driving a car if possible. Third, we should plant more trees, because plants can turn CO2 into oxygen. More importantly, we should form the habit of saving energy in our daily life.

  27. 1. Polar ice caps meltingThe ice caps melting is a four-pronged (尖端分叉的) danger. First, it will raise sea levels. Second, melting ice caps will throw the global ecosystem out of balance. Third, temperature rises and changing landscapes in the arctic circle (北极圈) will endanger several species of animals. Fourth, global warming could snowball with the ice caps gone. Ice caps are white, and reflect (反射) sunlight, much of which is reflected back into space, further cooling Earth. If the ice caps melt, the only reflector(反射体) is the ocean (海洋). Darker colors absorb sunlight, further warming the Earth.

  28. 2. Economic consequencesMost of the effects of anthropogenic (人为的) global warming won’t be good. And these effects spell one thing for the countries of the world: economic consequences. Hurricanes cause billions of dollars in damage, diseases cost money to treat and control and conflicts exacerbate (恶化) all of these.

  29. 3. Increased probability and intensity (强度) of droughts (干旱) and heat wavesAlthough some areas of Earth will become wetter due to global warming, other areas will suffer serious droughts and heat waves. Africa will receive the worst of it, with more severe droughts also expected in Europe. Water is already a dangerously rare commodity (日用品) in Africa, and according to the Intergovernmental (政府间的) Panel (全体陪审员) on climate change, global warming will exacerbate (恶化) the conditions and could lead to conflicts and war.

  30. 4. Warmer waters and more hurricanesAs the temperature of oceans rises, so will the probability of more frequent and stronger hurricanes. We saw in this in 2004 and 2005.

  31. 5. Spread of diseaseAs northern countries warm, disease carrying insects migrate north, bringing plague(瘟疫) and disease with them. Indeed some scientists believe that in some countries due to global warming, malaria (疟疾) has not been fully eradicated(根除).
