Asthefirstinherfamily toattend afour-yearuniversity,Anitalacked aroadmap tohelphernegotiatetherigorousacademicenvironment.Andthen,duringherfirst quarterofstudy,herbeloved grandfatherdied suddenlyofaheart attack. “Just hours beforehediedheheld myhand andsaid,‘Love Godand keep studying.’Those wordsbecamemylife’smotto,”Anitasaid.“During thetimeswhenIhadverylittlefinancial oremotionalsupport,Iclung tothose words.” Fast-forwardacoupledecades.AnitaHerrera becameDr.AnitaHerreraHamiltona boardcertifiedpediatricneuropsychologist at Children’s Hospital,LosAngeles.Having attainedhereducationalgoalsshewants toempowerthe world todothesame.Literally.Hamiltonhaslaunched aone-of-a-kind, websitecalledSynaap.org,aninteractivesocial mediatool toprovide studentswiththeinformation,accesstomentorship and theencouragement needed to stayon track withtheir educational goals. The idea behindSynaap.org istoestablishanational and then global networkofcollaborativementorship thatisconvenient,efficientandaccessibletoanyoneinneedofeducationalsupport. Hamiltonbelieves thatmentorship isafluid,organic,collaborationofsupportiveteammembers, and eachmentorbringsauniqueperspectiveand role.At Synaap.org,some will focuson academics,otherswillprovideinsightgeared toward personal orprofessional development. Thegoalistoencourageothers tooptimizetheirhard work,knowledgeand personal lifeexperiences. “BecauseofSynaap.org,futureleadersnolongerhavetofeel isolated or aloneintheir educational journey,”Hamiltonsaid.“Theywill beabletosee,knowandinteract withotherslikethem,or who started out likethem,and through theseinteractionsachievetheireducational goalsthenturnaround and dothesame.” HamiltoncompletedherBachelorofArts inEnglishLiteratureatUCLA(1996) andherPh.D.inclinicalpsychologywithanemphasisinneuropsychologyattheFullerSchool of PsychologyinPasadena (2005).FollowingresidencyatChildren’s Hospital Coloradoand a post-doctoralfellowship inpediatricneuropsychologyat Children’s Hospital LosAngeles,Dr.Hamiltonreceivedboardcertificationin ClinicalNeuropsychologyfrom theAmericanBoard ofClinicalNeuropsychology.SheiscurrentlyCHLA’sDirectorofNeuropsychologyatthe Children’sOrthopaedicCenter.

Dr.Hamiltonenvisions5,000memberswithinSynaap.org’sfirst year,increasing to20,000thesecond year,and 100,000inthethirdyear.Futuregoalsinclude: providing informationresourcesfromlocalandnational expertsviathe site’s“Fuel,”“Balance”and“Inspire” tabs;hosting/streaming localand nationalleadersspeaking toothersabout educationand professionaldevelopment; obtainingadvertisingcontractstocoverfinancial costsand overhead;initiating aSynaapapp that allowsmemberslog theireducation,exerciseandnutrition progressand then analyzethisdatatomodifybehaviorandrealizesuccess; and opening aSynaap.org headquarters as thewebsitebecomesTHE social mediatool forall mentorship organizations,withglobal inputfrom all sevencontinents.
