Psalm 3. The story of Psalm 3. David was king of Israel 1000 years before Jesus came to the earth. Absalom was a son of David. Absalom wanted to become king so he attacked David. David ran away to a safe place. Absalom said, "Now I am king of Israel".

  2. The story of Psalm 3 • David was king of Israel 1000 years before Jesus came to the earth. Absalom was a son of David. Absalom wanted to become king so he attacked David. David ran away to a safe place. Absalom said, "Now I am king of Israel". • But David asked God for help. David became king again. Absalom died. The story is in the Second Book of Samuel, chapters 15 - 19. • David wrote Psalm 3 after he ran away. He wrote it one morning. In it, David thanked the LORD for a safe night. That is why we call Psalm 3 a morning song. We must thank God every morning when he keeps us safe in the night. • This psalm is read in the Prime (1st hour).

Psalm 3 • Psalm 3 • A Psalm of David when he fled from Absalom his son. • 1 LORD, how they have increased who trouble me!         Many are they who rise up against me.2 Many are they who say of me,         “There is no help for him in God.”  Selah  3 But You, O LORD, are a shield for me,         My glory and the One who lifts up my head.4 I cried to the LORD with my voice,         And He heard me from His holy hill.  Selah  5 I lay down and slept;         I awoke, for the LORD sustained me.6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people         Who have set themselves against me all around. 7 Arise, O LORD;         Save me, O my God!          For You have struck all my enemies on the cheekbone;          You have broken the teeth of the ungodly.8 Salvation belongs to the LORD.         Your blessing is upon Your people.  Selah  

  4. Psalm 3 on Good Friday • At the of the twelfth hour on Good Friday, we pray “Lord have mercy” 100 times in each of the 4 directions. This is followed by A procession and the service ends with the burial of the Cross with priests reading psalms 1, 2 and 3 until they reach “I lay down and slept”. • So, this psalm has a prophecy about the death of our Lord Jesus Christ and His resurrection (and I awoke).

  5. What do we learn? • Learn to talk to God and express your feelings, your worries and your problems in your prayers. • In the 8th segment of the Sunday Theotokia we say “I remembered Your Name and I was comforted”. • Satan and his followers try to implant fear and despair by saying “there is no help for you in God”. • You have to be sure of what you have. “But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head”. If you do, nothing can shake your faith. Despite all the troubles and enemies, David knows for sure what God can do for him.

  6. What to learn? • Have faith that when you cry to the Lord, He will hear you. • Even if you fall, have faith that the Lord will raise you again. • If you cannot rise up, cry to the Lord and say “salvation belongs to the Lord”.

  7. Something to do • 1.    Learn Psalm 3: 5 by heart. Say it every morning. ("By heart" means that you can repeat the words without looking at them.) • 2.    When trouble happens: •    ·    tell Jesus about it •    ·    look away from the trouble to Jesus •    ·    wait for the answer
