Acts 1:2-5 (NKJV) 2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. . . . 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  5. Luke 24:47-49 (NKJV) 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things. 49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high." Acts 1:2-5 (NKJV) 4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  6. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 7 . . . "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, (Acts 1:24-2:1) “. . . with the eleven apostles. 8. “It will HAPPEN” – Does NOT Imply that the signs will continue – even though the results DO! Acts 2:16-21 (NKJV) 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,Your young men shall see visions,Your old men shall dream dreams.18 And on My menservants and on My maidservantsI will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. God did! Thus fulfilled – Acts 2 & 10 They Did – Acts 21:9 NOT throughout those days All Christians Did NOT Prophesy! – 1 Cor. 12:28-29 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  9. Acts 2:16-21 (NKJV) 19 I will show wonders in heaven aboveAnd signs in the earth beneath:Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,And the moon into blood,Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. 21 And it shall come to passThat whoever calls on the name of the LordShall be saved.' “It will HAPPEN” –. . . The signs confirmed the substance – But the signs were NOT the substance themselves! “SHALL BE SAVED” - This is the GIFT - the SUBSTANCE to which all the signs pointed - which God promises to ALL who call! 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  10. Joel 2:28-32 (NKJV) 28 "And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. 29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  11. Joel 2:28-32 (NKJV) 30 "And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: Blood and fire and pillars of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  12. Joel 2:28-32 (NKJV) 32 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, As the Lord has said, Among the remnant whom the Lord calls. 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  13. The audience’s question - "Whatever could this mean?“ (vs. 12) • “. . . hath shed forth this, which you now see and hear” (2:33; vs. 1-15). • Marked the establishment the Kingdom of Heaven (Joel 2:28-3:21; Mark 9:1). 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  14. The Bible Says: • “This is that” • “It shall come to passin the last days” • “I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh” • “They shall prophesy” • “Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” • The Bible DOES NOT SAY: • That “this” will continue • It shall continue throughout the last days • I will baptize all flesh with the Holy Spirit • They shall all speak in unknown tongues • Whosoever shall receive Holy Spirit baptism shall be saved and perform miracles 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  17. “All Flesh” is Limited and Must be UnderstoodIn the Light of its Fulfillment • “All flesh is not the same flesh” (1 Cor. 15:39). – (The flesh of beasts, fish and birds?) • “All Flesh” does NOT include “All Human Flesh!” - (Atheist, agnostics, adulterers, drunkards)? • “All Flesh” does NOT imply “All Believers” would prophesy – (not every believer prophesies - 1 Cor. 12:28-29) 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  18. Reception of gift is conditional • The “GIFT” is that to which the signs pointed – not the signs themselves! • What was the MAIN point of Joel’s prophecy? Acts 2:38-39 (NKJV) 38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call." 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  21. Gal. 3:14 (NKJV) 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. • Acts 2:38 • The promise to which the signs pointed – (21) • Received AFTER they repented & were baptized in the name of Jesus 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  22. Gal. 3:26-29 (NKJV) 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, . . . • Acts 2:38 • The promise to which the signs pointed – (21) • Received AFTER they repented & were baptized in the name of Jesus 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  23. Gal. 3:26-29 (NKJV) . . . there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. • Acts 2:38 • The promise to which the signs pointed – (21) • Received AFTER they repented & were baptized in the name of Jesus 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  28. The Samaritans “believed . . . were baptized” (Acts 8:5,12,16). • Thus they received the remission of sins and what the Holy Spirit had promised to ALL THOSE WHO CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD, (Acts 2:21)! • But they had no miraculous gifts until the apostles came and laid hands on them (Acts 8:14-18). • Thus, one can receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and not receive miraculous spiritual gifts! 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  29. Cornelius’ household received the baptism of the Holy Spirit (10:44-45) “the like gift” (11:17) as “at the beginning” (11:15). • But this “like gift” as “at the beginning” is not the same as “the gift of the Holy Spirit” of Acts 2:38. • The baptism of the Holy Spirit came before water baptism and salvation in Acts 10:44-48. • Water baptism came before “the gift of the Holy Spirit” in Acts 2:38. 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  30. Acts 8:12-17 (NKJV) 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. 13 Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized . . . 17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. Acts 10:44-48 (NKJV) 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. . . . 47 "Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?"48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days. 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  31. Sin separates a person from God – Is 59:1,2; Rom 6:23 • The blood of Jesus cleanses a person of his sins – Ep 1:7; Col 1:14 • The blood is found ONLY in Christ – Rom. 3:24; Eph 1:3; Col. 1:14 No Sin – BUT Still Lost - & Outside Christ Alien Lost Sinner – YET IN Christ 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  32. 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007

  33. “Whosoever shall call . . . shall be saved” (Acts 2:21). • “Repent and be baptized everyone of you . . . for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38). • “Save yourselves from this untoward generation” (Acts 2:40). • “In every nation he that feareth . . . is accepted” (Acts 10:35). • “Whosoever believeth in him shall have remission of sins (Acts 10:43). 65th St church of Christ / June 17, 2007
