  1. Welcome Class of 20187th to 8th Grade Course Selection Meeting

  3. Purpose for Tonight • Learn how to register for 8th grade • Discuss changes for 2013 – 2014 School year Counselors: Kim Petty - 8th grade Renae Perez - 7th grade

  4. Course Selection for 8th Grade • ALL 8th Graders will register on-line at school with assistance from the Counselors on March 4th, 6th or 7th. • Students must have the course selection sheet with parent signature to register.

  5. 8th Grade Core Classes * English * Math * US History * Science

  6. G/T HUMANITIES • Students currently enrolled in G/T Humanities will automatically be enrolled for 8th grade. • G/T Humanities classes consist of English and US History • Students enrolled in G/T Humanities and who wish not to be must apply for a furlough through Learner Services. • Those interested in G/T Humanities program, visit the Gifted and Talented Services tab under Learner Services on the Allen website.

  7. Science, English & U.S. History • Students may choose On Level OR Pre-AP/IB classes when selecting Science, English and U.S. History courses for 8th grade. • NO prequalifying for these courses!

  8. ALGEBRA 1Pre-AP/IB • Student qualifies based on: * Successful completion of Math 7 Pre-AP/IB * 6th grade Math STAAR * 1st semester grade in Math 7 Pre-AP/IB * Orleans Hanna Algebra Readiness Test • Student will receive 1 high school credit if all requirements are met (grade is not included in high school GPA). • Course content and work load are the equivalent of a high school course. • High school expectations will be adhered to throughout the year. • Any student who did not meet criteria for Algebra 1 Pre-AP/IB will be re-evaluated using final Math 7 Pre-AP/IB grade and 7th Math STAAR score. • There are NO Appeals

  9. Business Information Management 1 • Students completing all the requirements of this course will receive 1 High School Technology Credit. • Full year elective • It is recommended that students are able to type at least 25 words per minute.

  10. FOREIGN LANGUAGE Spanish 1 Pre-AP/IB & French 1 Pre-AP/IB • Students must have an 85 1st semester average in BOTH English and Math. • Students who did not qualify based upon 1stsemester averages may request a re-evaluation to Advanced Academics office with final average by June 10, 2013. Email: advancedacademics@allenisd.org • Students will earn 1 High School Credit if all requirements are met (grade not included in GPA). • Course content and workload are the equivalent of a high school course with extensive outside-of-class preparation. High School expectations will be adhered to throughout the school year.

  11. Principles of Hospitality and Tourism • Students completing this course will receive ½ High School Credit. • Introductory course for students interested in pursing Culinary Arts and Hospitality and Tourism classes in high school.

  12. Coed PE Students are required to take 2 semesters of PE credit during Middle School. Students who have not completed this requirement, must take PE during the 8th grade.

  13. ATHLETICS • Boys’ Athletics include football, basketball, track and off-season. • Girls’ Athletics include volleyball, basketball, track and off-season. • Boys wanting to play basketball only should enroll in PE Fall & PE Spring, NOT Boys’ Athletics.

  14. Sports Physicals • Sports physical paperwork should be given to the student’s coaches. • Sports physical forms and information are kept with the athletic department. Forms and information can also be found on the Allen ISD Athletic Department web page.

  15. TRY-OUT SPORTS • Cheerleading • Basketball (boys and girls) • Volleyball • Golf – Fall • Tennis – Spring .

  16. Electives One Semester Electives: • Career Portal in Human Services • Career Portal in Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) • Career Portal in Communications and Media Arts Science • Career Portal in Health Science • Career Portal in Business • Career Portal in Finance • Exploring Careers • Technology Applications in Communication • Technology Applications in Computer Graphics • Exploring Speech and Communications • Introduction to Art • Advanced Art (Prerequisite: Introduction to Art) • Introduction to Theatre Arts • Advanced Theatre Arts (Prerequisite: Introduction to Theatre Arts) • Leadership

  17. Fine Arts Electives (Full year) Band Orchestra Choir You must be in Band or Orchestra in 7th grade to be in Band or Orchestra in 8th grade.

  18. APPLICATION CLASSES FULL-YEAR HALF-YEAR • Yearbook – dueMarch 22 • PALS – due March 1 • Peer Helper – due March 25 • Teacher Aide - due March 22 • Office Aide – due March 22 AFTER DUE DATE HAS PASSED, APPLICATION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED! Each application has the due date written on it.

  21. What is STAAR? The State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) is a more rigorous standardized testing program that will replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) for elementary, middle school and high school students.
