Grading • All three schools will report grades quarterly. • Grades are as follows: • 1 (secure) • 2 (developing) • 3 (needs attention). • Outcome Assessments will be given in both ELA and MATH on a quarterly basis. -Outcome Assessments determine how students perform. -Identify what targets need to be addressed. -Allow parents to see student progress. • Mrs. Frankovich and Ms. Shanahan will be sharing further details about grading practices at Grand Prairie.

  5. Communication • Class Website – class updates, what students will be learning each week, downloads, important dates, and announcements. Go to fsd157c.org, click “Staff Directory”  “Grand Prairie Staff Directory”  Scroll down to Second Grade and click on “Kristin Kora” • Email Blasts from class and school • Monthly Newsletter – Dates, reminders, projects, and standards/topics for the month

Awards, Rewards, and Behavior • District – Student of the month – picked for specific character pillars • School - Tiger Stripes and Golden Pillar Trophy • Tiger Stripes will be given out to students in the school showing great character! • Students can earn the Golden Pillar Traveling Trophy also by showing great character. Students are called over the announcements every week. • Classroom – • Clip system for behavior in classroom • All students start each day on green “ready to learn” • Can clip up for positive choices that show great character and students can clip down for not making good choices and not following the classroom rules. If they clip down, they can clip back up throughout the day by making good choices • Students pick from Treasure Chest if they clip up 3x in a day • Students will receive a Behavior Notice stating any negative behavior and consequence if he/she clipped down 3x times in a day or if a bigger rule was broken and we feel the parents should be notified. • Class Piggy Bank – Classroom reward earn coins as a class to earn Piggy Bank Parties

  8. Eureka Math • What is Eureka? The Eureka Math resource was built around the core principle that students need to know more than just what works when solving a problem – they need to understand why it works. • Why Eureka? Eureka has received high ratings from educators nationwide and school districts are seeing growth and impressive test scores after just one year of implementation. • Eureka with Growth Mindset Students with a Growth Mindset aren’t afraid to make mistakes. Brain research shows that mistakes are good and help you to learn more. Kids with a Growth Mindset achieve more.

  9. What will Eureka look like in the classroom? Typically, there are 6 components to each lesson: • Fluency– Daily math fact practice which is used to maintain skills, prepare for the current lesson, and/or anticipate skills used in future lessons • Application Problem – Word problem which can lead into the concept development or review a concept from the previous day • Concept Development – Majority of the lesson which teaches a particular skill. Can include a variety of activities (whiteboards, manipulatives, partner work) • Problem Set– Independent practice to apply the skills taught from the concept development. Sometimes students will work on only a few problems • Debrief– Reflection after problem set to review as a whole class a few areas • Exit Ticket – Quick gauge of student understanding of the day’s skill

  10. Eureka School/Home Connection Problem Sets Problem Sets can come home unfinished and that is okay. It is encouraged to review and complete the Problem Sets with your child at home. Exit Tickets Exit Tickets will be coming home frequently and it is encouraged to review the Exit Tickets with your child at home. Assessments/Rubrics Assessments can be informal observations, exit tickets, mid module assessments, and end of module assessments. Rubrics will be used to grade and inform you of your child’s progress on the mid module and end of module assessments.

Reading Common Core: ELA (English Language Arts) • Reading for Literature (fiction) • Reading for Information (nonfiction) • Speaking and Listening • Writing (paragraph and response) • Reading Foundation (phonics, word work, vocabulary) • Language (grammar) Reading Groups • Reading groups are based on the need to develop skills that we are working on from the common core standards. Groups may focus on decoding, fluency, comprehension, or specific standards.

Reader’s Workshop • Explicit instruction in reading skills and strategies through a daily mini lesson • Quality time spent practicing skills previously taught in lessons • Focused time spent in small group instruction Students will be: Independent reading while practicing strategies Reading with a buddy to practice strategies Writing in response to reading Listening to reading

Writer’s Workshop • There will be mini lessons, small group strategy sessions, and one-on-one conferences • Students will be writing every day • Students will have goals to work towards • Students will be writing narratives, informational pieces, opinion pieces, science books, responses to reading, poetry, and more “The intent of this series is to support students’ abilities to be strategic, metacognitive writers who use particular processes to achieve purposes as writers”. - Lucy Calkins

  14. Structured Word Inquiry • Instruction that builds an understanding of word structure as a tool for investigating the interrelation of spelling and meaning. • Students investigate the meaning, structure and history of words through word webs, word matrices and guided inquiry

  17. Assessment • FASTBRIDGE is the district adopted assessment in ELA and Math. • FASTBRIDGE will be administered 3x per year in grades 1st and 2nd. (Fall, Winter, Spring) • FASTBRIDGE results will be used for third grade Advanced ELA placement (students must be in the 95%ile or above in their school) • Please contact Janet McClarence, Director of Curriculum & Instruction or Kirsten Frankovich, GP Principal with questions

Science • Our curriculum follows the Illinois Learning Standards for Science based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). • The focus is on students DOING science. • Students will study earth science, physical science, life science, and engineering. (Some topics include volcanoes, weather, erosion, melting and freezing, solids and liquids, plants, habitats, tower building, bridge engineering, and Lego engineering). • Lots of great new resources for hands-on learning. *Science will not be on the report card

  19. Social Emotional Learning • Second Step SEL • Researched based program • 30 minute lesson once a week • Engaging activities – fun songs and games • Children learn how to make new friends, manage their emotions, solve problems, and deal with peer pressure

Bus Reminders From the Office • The busing information you received in the mail is where we will be sending your child after school.  If you have any changes, you MUST contact the office or send a note with your student. From the Bus Drivers • Please have your children to their assigned bus stop 5 minutes before their scheduled pickup time. • Please remember, cell phones are not allowed in school zones, unless being used in “hands free” mode. • Please do no attempt to pass a school bus from either direction when it has its lights flashing and its stop arm extended.

  22. FSP • The FSP is the Parent Teacher Organization for District 157-C.
