    1. 1 Electricity Utilization Principles of Good Practices

    2. 2 Content of Presentation Introduction Objective Principles of Good Electricity Utilization Principle – Safety Principle – Usefulness Principle – Modesty and Efficiency Example of Good Practice Example of Bad Practice

    3. 3 Introduction A Micro Hydro Power Scheme is able to provide electric power for a variety of activities Electric power utilization should support improved welfare of its users Electric power is not only for lighting and entertainment but it should also be used for income generating activities A low load factor reflects poor electricity utilization

    4. 4 Objective To make people understand that an MHP Scheme is not just for providing lighting and television but also for productive end uses Targets: People understand the principles of electricity utilization People understand the good practice of electricity utilization People understand the potential of income generating electricity utilization practices

    5. 5 Principles of Electricity Utilization There are three basic principles of electricity utilization: Safety: Electricity is dangerous and should be handled with care Usefulness: Electricity should bring economic benefits to the users Modesty and Efficiency: Electricity users must consider other’s needs and use electricity rationally

    6. 6 Principles - Safety Safety means ensuring safety standards are followed in the utilization of electricity Main aspects of safe electricity utilization are: Proper installation by contractor Use standard fixture/cables to ensure safety Always wear feet protection (sandals/shoes) Ensure electrical appliances are not near water or in damp locations Keep out of reach of children Supervision from trained operator for additional installation Use appliances which are compatible with the supply (voltage, wattage, etc)

    7. 7 Principles - Usefulness “Useful” means electricity utilization should bring tangible benefits to the users Non-Financial Benefits Improved illumination during evening hours Can conduct social activities during the evening Improved health conditions Improved access to information and entertainment Financial Benefit Can operate shops / small businesses Can improve selling value of agriculture products etc. Can substitute costly fossil fuel solutions

    8. 8 Principles – Modesty & Efficiency Modesty is an attitude which respects the community needs as a whole. Use only what you need Do not pilfer electricity Reduce consumption during dry season Efficiency is consuming as minimum amount as possible for the specific requirement Shut off appliances when not needed Use energy efficient lamps etc.

    9. 9 Example of Good Practice Step 1. Plan the needs of new appliances and always consider their power consumption Step 2. Choose energy saving lamps from a reputable manufacturer Step 3. Additional fixtures or outlets installation should be made only under the supervision of trained operator

    10. 10 Example of Good Practice Step 4. Use appliances only when needed Step 5. Avoid to use appliances at peak load hours (usually between 17.30-21.00 hours) Step 6. Reduce the use of appliances in the dry season to improve the service of MHP scheme Step 7. Start to plan small business ventures utilizing electric power to improve the day time utilization of the MHP and stimulate the local economy
