    3. What does the law say? You can generally qualify for extra help with your living costs - in addition to help with your tuition fees - if: you have lived in ‘the UK or Islands’ (the UK plus the Channel Islands and Isle of Man ) for more than three years or you qualify for financial help in the UK through EEA or Swiss migrant worker status, or as the child of someone who has Turkish worker status

    4. Do you qualify? Usually, you'll qualify for EEA or Swiss migrant worker status if ALL the following apply: you are a national of an EEA country or Switzerland you are working in the UK you were ‘ordinarily resident’ in the EEA and Switzerland for three years before starting your course You may also qualify if you are a family member of a migrant worker in the UK.

    5. EU Student or Migrant Worker? If you come to the UK as an EU Student you won’t be able to apply for additional support with your living costs If you apply for a student loan as an EU student you will be given EU8N form If you apply for a student loan as a migrant worker you will use PN1 form You have to come to England initially to work and then to study otherwise you are not a migrant worker!!!!

    6. What to do? You need to either work or prove you actively look for a job in England ONLY!!!!! Before 1st September!!!!! Recommended to come in July (once you know you are accepted to study in Huddersfield) Moreover it is usually easier to find a job and accommodation when you come early

    7. How to apply? Download the application online from: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/UniversityAndHigherEducation/StudentFinance/DG_10035438 Pick up a copy in Huddersfield

    8. How to apply? Fill in the form and bring it with you to Kirklees Metropolitan Council in Huddersfield, which is the local education authority As it is faster to do so there because you can get an additional info and help They will also make all photocopies of necessary documents free of charge It is called ‘maintenance grant’ in the form

    9. When to do it When applying for a student loan using the same form PN1 Remember you must apply after you have come to England!!! (your home address must be the one in Huddersfield) You are eligible to apply for the grant until 31st May 2009

    10. What else you need to do once you are in Huddersfield? Open a bank account ASAP This will prove you stayed in England Your bank will send you a letter which will serve as a proof of address which you will need later Keep ALL wage slips You will need those to prove you have been working throughout your studies in England If you do not work throughout your studies in England (or cannot prove it) you will have to give the grant back!!!!!!

    11. Good luck
