Study Objective:

Which LED combinations can achieve a match with the 3000K 100CRI Low Voltage Incandescent?

Participants: 1 man (45 years old), 4 women (10, 12, 16 and 44 years old). Participants passed the Ishihara color test.

Camera: Minolta Dimage 7i 5.0 Megapixel

High Dynamic Range Images obtained from image stacking with exposure times from 4 sec to 1/125 sec

High Dynamic Range Software: Photosphere

Camera Reference Light Source Color: Minolta Daylight Cloudy

Reference lamp in images on left: Low Voltage Halogen 20W 100 CRI 3000K

Light source in images on right: LEDs Lumileds from April 2007

Individual dimming of LED colors 9 white at 5600 K, 3 red, 3 redorange, 3 amber, 3 green, 3 cyan, 3 blue, 3 royal blue with PWM

Active Water Cooling:

LEDs mounted on copper pipe with circulating cold water to maintain low constant junction temp.

Conclusions

A visual match of the low voltage incandescent lamp at 3000K can be obtained with

White 5650K + G + R at 3700K and CIE xy coordinates 0.3905, 0.3770 and CRI 81

White 5650K + G + Amber + R at 3550K and CIE xy coordinates

0.3992, 0.3779 and CRI 91

Conclusions, continued

The participants expressed concern that it was impossible to exactly match the appearance of low voltage incandescent with LEDs since „something is missing“

Nevertheless, they preferred a match of white+green+amber+red instead of white+green+red

They rejected trials without green

Conclusions, continued

Red-orange was rejected as a member for matching, since it created an artificial glow and seemed to too much of a good thing

Every LED combination seemed to be missing the whitish-light yellow appearance of the low voltage incandescent

Amber with white, green and red is necessary to achieve a CRI over 90

Without amber, the CRI hovers around 80
