SMHI is a government agency under the Ministry of the Environment and the advisory body on meteorology, hydrology and oceanography.

SMHI’s operation is funded in three main ways:

by government subsidy

by assignment from other government agencies

on commercial terms through its Business Services.

Turnover: 530 MSEK (Government 325 MSEK / Business 205 MSEK)

Employees: 550 (30-40 oceanographers & data managers)

Head office in Norrköping

Oceanographic Unit & Oceanographic Laboratory in Göteborg

Regional met offices in Stockholm, Göteborg, Malmö, Sundsvall


SMHI:

is “Data host” for national and regional marine physical, chemical and biological monitoring data (appointed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency)

runs the BALTEX Oceanographic Data Centre

runs the Swedish IPY Data Centre

has started negotiations with the Swedish Research Council to be ”Data host” for climate- and environmental research data

hosts the EuroGOOS office
