Introduction Stevia is a perennial shrub, indigenous to the northern regions of South America. Stevia is still found growing wild in the highlands of the Amambay and Iguacu districts (a border area between Brazil and Paraguay)
History For hundreds of years, indigenous peoples in Brazil and Paraguay have used the leaves of Stevia as a sweetener. The Guarani Indians of Paraguay call it kaa jheé and have used it to sweeten their yerba mate tea for centuries. They have also used stevia to sweeten other foods and have used it medicinally as a cardio tonic, for obesity, hypertension, and heartburn, and to help lower uric acid levels.
Botanical Name: Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni • Belongs to Asteraceae / Composite family – same as marigolds, sunflower & chrysanthemums • One of 154 members of genus stevia • Only the sweet one known by above name • Grows upto 60cms height. Leaves can be harvested 3 - 5 times a year after initial growth, if perennial • Reportedly used by Guarani tribe of Paraguay and nearby Brazil for more than 1500 years as sweetener for their green herbal tea – mate & other domestic purposes as a flavor enhancer and medicinal purposes such as treatment of burns, wounds, acne, eczema, digestion, colds, flu, sinus & lung congestion etc.

Native Paraguayans have been consuming this herb in large quantities for many centuries. It was only during early fifties that Japanese stumbled up on this unique herb & took it to Japan where they have developed many varieties of this wonderful herb for large scale cultivation. The leaves of this plant are 30 times sweeter than sugar, with zero calories. Where as pure extract is 300-450 times sweeter than sugar.
