Painting the picture • Primary Homelessness People without conventional accommodation, such as people living on the streets, sleeping in parks, squatting in derelict buildings or using cars or railway carriages for temporary shelter. • Secondary Homelessness People moving from one form of temporary accommodation to another. They do not have security of tenure provided by a lease.

  3. Counting the numbers • Every night across Australia almost 105,000 people are homeless • 45% staying with family & friends • 20% in boarding houses • 16% sleeping rough • 19% in a homeless service

  4. Who is homeless in NSW? • the characteristics of those who used SAAP services in 2009 –10: • Male (42%) • Female (58%) • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders 18 % (Compared to a relative population size of 2.3%)

  5. Some final thoughts “A pessimist sees only the dark side of the clouds, and mopes; a philosopher sees both sides, and shrugs; an optimist doesn't see the clouds at all - he's walking on them”. Leonard Louis Levinson
