  2. Tips for Talking to Teens • Encourage open communication early in children’s lives. • Listen attentively. • Avoid excessive criticism of a teen’s appearance or lifestyle choices. • Be sensitive to teenage feelings.

  3. Ask if someone the teen knows has experienced a particular problem to help open a discussion about high risk behavior without becoming personally confrontational. • Avoid power struggles; Negotiate rather than argue. • Avoid interrogative style conversations, but be direct whenever possible.

  4. Try to help with decision making instead of making judgments or lecturing. • Be firm in setting limits and don’t condone or ignore risk-taking behavior. • Respect privacy. • Be available. • Encourage teens to ask for help. • Assure confidentiality.
