  1. Deuteronomy 3:23-29 And I besought the LORD at that time, saying, O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might? I pray thee, let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that goodly mountain, and Lebanon. But the LORD was wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter. Get thee up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold it with thine eyes: for thou shalt not go over this Jordan. But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see. So we abode in the valley over against Bethpeor.

  5. A Quick Review

  6. Moses Recounts Israel’s History

  7. SELECTING JUDGES Moses was counseled to divide up the work load of judging Israel. (Exodus 18:17-26) Moses recounts this event in Deuteronomy 1:9-18. The character of Israel’s judges was of upmost important, they were not to accept bribes, they were to judge righteously, and they were never to show favoritism or partiality. Future judges in Israel were to take heed to do the same.

  8. SENDING OF THE TEN SPIES Moses recounts the events thusly And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadeshbarnea. And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God doth give unto us. Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged (Deu. 1:19-21).

  9. SPARE YOUR BROTHERS The Lord spared Edom and Moab because both were related to Israel (Gen. 25:21-26). Deuteronomy 2:4-5, therefore the Israelites were not to meddle with them. Lot’s two daughters gave birth to two people (Gen. 19:36-38). Lot was Abraham’s nephew thus all three of these groups were related.

  10. JUDGE THE NATIONS Israel was the instrument of God’s justice toward the nations who inhabited the land. Two prominent kings served as examples to others that God’s people would have the land. Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan both refused to allow Israel to pass through their lands. Moses rehearsed the matter in Deuteronomy 2:24-31. The same fate awaited Og king of Bashan as God had delivered Sihon into Israel’s hands so would he deliver Og and his people (Deu. 3:1-14).

  11. YOUR SINS WILL FIND YOU OUT And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war, And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him, And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD. But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out (Num. 32:20-23). Moses recounts these events for the second generation of Israelites it is recorded in Deuteronomy 3:13-20. Refusing to help their brethren was no small matter, giving their word was equally important. Moses cautioned that if they refused to help or keep their word they would sin against God and for that they would give an account.

  12. THE LORD WAS ANGRY WITH ME Moses’ life taught Israel two very important things. 1) No one is irreplaceable. Joshua was his successor. Joshua was able to lead because God would be with him as he had been with Moses. 2) There are no exceptions to obedience. Moses did not enter the promised land because of disobedience (Num 20:7-12).

  13. God Allowed Moses To See It Moses pled that God would allow him to enter the Promised. But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see (Deu. 3:26-28).

  14. Deuteronomy 4:1-2 Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you. Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

  16. Now Therefore . . . Hearken - 1) to hear, listen to, obey (verb) Statues - 1) statute, ordinance, limit, something prescribed, due. Judgments 1)Judgment, justice, ordinance act of deciding a case

  17. Which I Teach You Teach - • to learn, teach, exercise in Whose word was it? 4:14; 33; 36; 40 5:24 6:1 9:9-10

  18. A Matter of Life and Death that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you (4:1b). Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes, and his commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, for ever (Deut 4:40).

  19. And thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, upon the altar of the LORD thy God: and the blood of thy sacrifices shall be poured out upon the altar of the LORD thy God, and thou shalt eat the flesh. Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of the LORD thy God (Deut 12:27-28).

  20. A Stern Warning Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you (Deut. 4:2). Any alteration and it ceases to be God’s word. Once changed it has no authority or power. Once changed it cannot make one acceptable to God.

  21. A Sober Reminder Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baalpeor: for all the men that followed Baalpeor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you. But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day (Deut. 4:3-4). See Numbers 25:1-5 Galatians 6:7-8 2 Peter 2:9

  22. Keeping God’s Wisdom Evidences Our Wisdom Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for? And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? (4:5-8)

  23. A Charge To Faithfulness Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons; Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children. (Deut. 4:9-10).
