What is Community Based Instruction? • Community Based Instruction is sustained and repeated instruction that takes place in the community rather than in the school building • CBI is a research-based practice to facilitate the transition to adult life for students with disabilities. CBI provides “real life” opportunities to teach aspects of the PA Core curriculum (what all students should know and be able to do)

What is Community based Instruction? • CBI is NOT a FIELD TRIP- it is sustained and repeated instruction that helps our students increase independence in employability, activities of daily living, communication, safety, self-help, mobility and travel, reading , social skills, behavior, leisure, and financial literacy

  4. WHO NEEDS CBI ? • Students who need support to transfer knowledge and skills from one environment to another • Students who learn best through direct instruction with hands on experiences • Students who remain in the District for extended programming through age 21

CBI- Elementary Life Skills Support Supports math, cooking, reading, safety, behavior, independence, communication, social skills, motor skills • SophisticakesBakery • Wynnewood Lanes • Giant & Acme grocery stores • Springfield Mall • Applebee’s, Pat’s Pizza, etc. • Post Office • Fire Department

  6. CBI- Middle School Supports math, cooking, reading, safety, behavior, independence, communication, social skills, motor skills, community service • Oakmont Fire House • Giant • McKenna’s Kitchen • Havertown Police Department • and more ...

CBI- HHS 9th - 12th graders at Haverford High School • Academics and Related Services (Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy) • Regular Education Electives (Baking, Sewing, Art, Marine Ecology, American History) • Time with typical peers and Best Buddies • Community Based Instruction • Vocational Job Training

CBI- HHS Supports banking, budgeting, time management, cooking, safety skills, independence, communication, social skills, travel training, etc. CBI occurs 3 to 4 times a week: • Giant, Acme, and BJ’s Wholesale Club • Ardmore Farmer’s Market • Oakmont Administrative Building • Bed Bath & Beyond • Whole Foods • Lawrence Park Shopping Center • and more...
