  2. Children’s Services Central Who we are: • Children’s Services Central is the NSW Professional Support Coordinator (PSC) • We are funded by the Australian Government • We are a part of the Inclusion and Professional Support Program (IPSP).

Session 2 Objectives Participants will: • Review session 1 content and Code of Conduct; • Revise the Thinking Environment and learn about Thinking Pairs and World Café styles of interaction; • Actively discuss National Quality Standards; • Engage in learning on Self Assessment; • Plan or refine approaches to Self Assessment; • Begin to develop the Quality Improvement Plan; and • Get to know resources and wikis

  5. The thinking environment Attention The quality of your attention profoundly affects the quality of other people’s thinking. Equality People are equal thinkers. Boundaries and agreements are respected

  6. The thinking environment Ease Offers freedom from internal rush or urgency. Ease creates; urgency destroys Appreciation Thinking requires balance of appreciation and critical comment. Practice a 5:1 ration of appreciation to criticism.

  7. The thinking environment Encouragement Competition does not ensure excellence. The search for ideas does not need to be competitive. Feelings Fear constricts thinking. Feelings should be welcomed as good thinking lies just beyond .

  8. The thinking environment Information Withholding or denying information results in intellectual vandalism. Supply the facts; dismantle denial Diversity Greater diversity within a group leads to diverse points of view. There is a greater chance of accurate cutting edge thinking.

  9. The thinking environment Incisive Questions Remove assumptions that limit our ability to think for ourselves. Place Create a physical environment that communicates value.

Why should we reflect? “Questioning how and why certain practices occur is the most effective way to begin critically examining service practice.” “The most effective improvements to service delivery are initiated from within the service, rather than being imposed from the outside.” ACECQA (2011) Guide to Developing a Quality Improvement Plan, pp. 5-6

To determine; • the effectiveness of practice for all children and families • the relevance of the practice to the service and its stakeholders • and the equity and fairness of the practice for all children, families and educators ACECQA (2011) Guide to Developing a Quality Improvement Plan, p. 6

  30. Why Reflect? ...it is important to reflect on practice, policies and procedures against the seven quality areas of the National Quality Standards and related regulatory requirements..... ACECQA (2012) Guide to Developing a Quality Improvement Plan, p. 5

  31. How? Questioning how and why certain practices occur is the most effective way to begin critically examining service practice. The Guide to the National Quality Standard includes a set of reflective questions that serve as prompts to explore actual practice at the service.   34. How can we self-assess? ...it is important to be, open, honest and critically reflective when undertaking the self-assessment and quality improvement planning process.   40. Homework 1.Have staff reflect on the National Quality Standard and ask “What are we famous for? And where do we need to work?”; 2.Refine your approaches to Self Assessment; 3.Continue with your Quality Improvement Plan.
