8. The PIN Process • Both student and parent (if student is dependent) need PIN • Issued from the FOTW or PIN site

The PIN Process from FOTW • Can request FSA to generate a PIN that will display on the screen in real time, request that it be emailed in real-time, or have it sent via postal mail. • Includes a match of name, SSN, and date of birth. If the match is successful, the PIN becomes permanent. If the match is unsuccessful, the applicant is mailed a SAR for signatures and the PIN is disabled.

FAFSA on the Web Worksheet • The questions within FAFSA on the Web are presented in a different order than the questions on the paper FAFSA. • The FAFSA on the Web Worksheet presents the questions in relatively the same order as they are presented within FAFSA on the Web. • Students wanting to pre-fill a paper form in preparation for submitting their application online should complete the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet rather than the paper FAFSA.

Special Circumstances • FAFSA on the Web has been updated to allow dependent students that are unable to provide parental data to submit their application online • No EFC will be calculated and students will be advised of the consequences of submitting an application without parental data • Students will be advised to follow-up with the financial aid office at the college they plan to attend.

What happens next? • The applicant will have access to the Student Aid Report (SAR) once the data is processed. • The link to the SAR will be sent via email if an address was provided on the FOTW or a paper SAR will be sent by postal mail if no email address was included. • The SAR arrives within days if the FOTW was submitted. If a paper FAFSA is filed it will take considerably longer.

Reminders for Your Participants • Refer to the actual forms when possible, e.g., the Social Security Card, the federal tax return or W2. • Recheck your responses before submitting your application. • Use estimates if tax returns are not completed, but remember to update the figures once the tax information is available. • If you need some assistance with the FAFSA, contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 800-433-3243.
