Long and Short Vowels. Grade 2 Jessica Holland. Long Vowels. Long vowels “say their name”. Long vowels sound very similar to the name of the vowel. Long vowels are represented by a macron. ( ō,ē,ī,ū ). Short Vowels.

  2. Long Vowels • Long vowels “say their name”. • Long vowels sound very similar to the name of the vowel. • Long vowels are represented by a macron. (ō,ē,ī,ū)

  3. Short Vowels • Short vowels do not say their name and do not sound like the name of the vowel. • Short vowels are normally represented in between two consonants. • Short vowels are represented with a breve. (í,é,á,ó)

  4. Examples of Long Vowels • Boat • Day • Me • Eat • Sea • Bone • Bee • Pie

  5. Examples of Short Vowels • Cup • Bed • Dig • Fun • Dog • Run • Sad • Jam • Fan • Tin

  6. Story Time Jack and Jill went up the hill, To fetch a pail of water; Jack fell down, and broke his crown, And Jill came tumbling after.
