  2. April 15, 2013 Outcome: Today you will examine the creation of new kingdoms in medieval Europe using round robin questioning

  3. NOW: read the passage silently and think of questions you might ask • Between 1000 and 1200, many women became nuns and entered convents. Convents were ideal places for study and writing. Most learned women of the Middle Ages were nuns. An example was Hildegard of Bingen. She was head of the convent in western Germany. Hildegard also composed church music. Her work is remarkable because at that time, men were primarily the ones writing music for the church.

  10. QQ: Germanic Kingdoms • Have you every moved to a new place? What adjustments did you have to make? In this section, we have read how the Germanic people who invaded Europe had to adjust to the lands they occupied.

  11. Who were the Franks? • When Clovis converted to Christianity, nearly all of his people followed his example. Do you feel that a religious conversion of a modern ruler could have the same effect today, why or why not?

  12. Who was Charlemagne? • If you were advising Charlemagne on whether he should accept the pope’s offer to become emperor of the Romans, what would be some advantages and disadvantages of the honor. What recommendation would you make?

Jot Notes Continued • Henry declared Gregory no longer pope • Gregory excommunicated Henry • German nobles chose a new emperor, Gregory accepted him and Henry declared war against Gregory • 1122, Concordat of Worms (agreement between the new pope and new emperor) that said pope chooses bishops and emperor could give them jobs in government • Catholic Church-powerful under Pope Innocent III (1198). He would threaten to withhold Christian rituals like communion from a king or his people.
