  2. Wood+Wind = Woodwinds • Woodwind instruments don't all have to be made of wood! Some are, like clarinets, oboes, English horns, and bassoons. But others, like the flute and saxophone, are metal. And in ancient times, woodwind instruments were sometimes carved from reeds, ivory, animal horns, or even from bone. Today, woodwinds can even be made from high-quality plastics.

  3. Most Woodwinds Need REEDS • Single Reeds • 1 piece of wood used to create sound with instruments (clarinets and saxophones) • Double Reeds • 2 pieces of wood tied together , used to create sound with instruments (oboes and bassoons)

  4. Flute: NO REED • High in pitch • No reed • Sound is made using the player’s air • Used in orchestras and bands

  5. Oboe: DOUBLE REED • High in pitch • Double reed • Sound is made using the player’s air and the movement of the reed • Used in orchestras and bands

  6. Clarinet: SINGLE REED • High AND Low in pitch • Single reed • Sound is made using the player’s air and the movement of the reed • Used in orchestras and bands

  7. Bassoon: DOUBLE REED • Low in pitch • Double reed • Sound is made using the player’s air and the movement of the reed • Used in orchestras and bands

  8. Saxophone: SINGLE REED • High AND Low in pitch • Single reed • Sound is made using the player’s air and the movement of the reed • Used in jazz and bands

  9. Some Relatives Piccolo (smaller than the flute) ContraBassoon (bigger than the bassoon Bass Clarinet (bigger than the clarinet) English Horn (bigger than the oboe)
