  2. Intoduction By 1775 the 13 Colonies were inhabited by a population of approximately 2 million whites and half a million Africans. The white population was becoming increasingly more diverse. Compared to Europe, America was a land of opportunity and equality, but there was a rising economic hierarchy and increasing social complexity. Ninety percent of Americans remained agriculturalist. A growing class of wealthy planters and merchants appeared at the top of the social pyramind. A visible lower class formed as well.

  3. By the early 18th century, the established New English church was losing fervor. A new style of emotional worship revived religious zeal. Colonial education and culture were general undistinguished, although science and journalism displayed some vigor. Politics were an important activity everywhere in the colonies, as representative colonial assemblies battled with appointed governors from England.
