  2. What is CCSS? • Common Core Curriculum Standards adopted by Mississippi and 45 other states • Rigorous standards taking content to a much greater depth of understanding and often introducing content much earlier than we currently do

  3. What Must We Do to Prepare? • Help teachers to • Understand the standards and the depth of understanding that the standards call for • What do they really say? • Provide teachers with content professional development when needed • Pilot units to practice and revise

  4. What Must We Do to Prepare? • Learn how to write appropriate assessments • Use NAEP as guide • Pilot assessment procedures as they are developed (PARCC)

  5. What is LCSD doing? • Working on comparing present curriculum standards to CCSS with West Ed Research and Development Group • 37 Language Arts teachers K-10 • 36 Math teachers K-8, Algebra I

  8. Here’s . . . What We’ve Done . . .And . . . What’s to Come . . . 2011 – 2012 • Identify Essential Standards – ELA and K-8 Math; English 9-10, Algebra I • Develop unit plans – ELA and K-8 Math; English 9-10, Algebra I • Develop teaching calendar • Implement K-2 (State mandated)

  9. 2011 – 2012 (continued) • Use October/January teacher days for teachers trained in the summer to train other teachers through district-wide collaboration • Train K-2 ELA/Math during August • Develop assessments for K-2 • Pilot some units from 3-8, High School

  10. Summer 2012 • Develop Common Assessments • Identify Essential Standards and develop unit plans for other subjects • Rework teaching calendars to include assessments • Make K-2 adjustments

  11. 2012 - 2013 • Implement 3-8 ELA/Math, 9-10 English, Algebra I • Train all staff on other curriculum

  12. Summer 2013 • Develop Common Assessments for other Curriculum • Make 3-8, 9-10 English, Algebra adjustments

  13. 2013 - 2014 FULL IMPLEMENTATION
