  1. SAS Group and the environment StoreStora IT-dagen – Seminarieprogram Stora IT-dagen - 20 november 2008 Lund Universitet Martin Porsgaard SAS Martin.porsgaard@sas.dk www.sasgroup.net

  2. SAS Group and the environment SAS Group and the environment 2008

For to år siden krevdes det effekt tilsvarende 20 ganger 1000 megawatts kraftverk for å kjøre Internett.Bare den populære videotjenesten YouTube har et energiforbruk som er like stor som elforbruket for hele Internett for to år siden.

  5. PC’ere udleder lige så meget CO2 som fly Danmarks Radio/TV 14. apr. 2008 07.41 IndlandOpdat.: 14. apr. 2008 Strømforbruget fra computere verden over udleder ligeså meget CO2 som hele den samlede flyindustri, hvilket svarer til cirka to procent af klodens samlede udledning i følge oplysninger fra Videnskabsministeriet.

  6. The global environmental challenge • Greenhouse gas emissions are an unavoidable effect of airline operations • Fuel combustion causes a rise in atmospheric CO2and other emissions, causing global climate change • Critical opinion • Air travel is expanding • Today 2-3% of CO2 emissions • Aircraft have a lifetime of 20 to 30 years SAS Group and the environment 2008

  7. Striking a balance – the challenge of aviation SAS Group and the environment 2008

  8. Facts about aviation Aviation • represents 8% of global GNP • generates 32 million jobs worldwide • is a safe, global mass transit system • represents 3% of the world's climate change impact SAS Group and the environment 2008

  9. SAS's environmental mile stones • Environmental report 1995 • Audited environmental report 1997 • Eco-par/biofuel 2000 • Emission Calculator 2002 • Carbon offset 2007 • Green approaches Arlanda, national and transatlantic • Crystal project 2008 • Named Best in Class twice by Morgan Stanley SAS Group and the environment 2008

  10. Principal strategic targets • 20% lower emissions by 2020 with traffic growth included. • 50% lower emissions per unit produced by 2020. • Possibility to fly with 0% greenhouse emissions by 2050. SAS Group and the environment 2008

  11. Limited contribution from aircraft to the greenhouse effect Heat radiation comes from the sun… ...gases in the earth´s atmosphere (primarily carbon dioxide) trap heat that would otherwise be radiated back out into space. The atmosphere Greenhouse gases The greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon and a necessary condition for life on earth. Without it, the surface of the earth would be 35 degrees colder than it is at present. Our carbon footprint is small but growing – From 2% today to 3% in 2050 (IPCC) SAS Group and the environment 2008

  12. SAS’s environmental strategy targets for 2020 SAS Group and the environment 2008

  13. SAS’s environmental strategy targets for 2020 SAS Group and the environment 2008

  14. SAS/IATA’s vision of possibility to fly with zero emissions by 2050 SAS Group and the environment 2008

  15. Goals for 2008 – 2011 SAS aims to • be seen as the most environmentally conscious airline in Europe • have certified environment management systems in accordance with ISO 14001 • have the industry's most efficient fuel saving program • be among te first airlines to blend in alternative fuel when approved and commercially available • have a long-term plan for aircraft fleet that leads to a significant CO2 reduction • have reached the target for SAS's eco-efficiency index SAS Group and the environment 2008

  16. Historical aircraft development SAS Group and the environment 2008

  17. Technological progressStrong Industry track record Over the last 40 years Soot has been eliminated Noise reduced 75% Fuel efficiency improved 70% Further 25% by 2020 ATA 30% by 2025 SAS Group and the environment 2008

  18. Emissions containment instruments Technological progress Infrastructure improvements Operational measures Economic instruments ACARE New technology Alternative fuel Improved aerodynamics NUAC Effective flight management Single sky Fuel saving programme Green approach ETS Taxes, Charges and Regulations SAS Group and the environment 2008

  19. Sustainable traffic growth and reduced environmental impact Activity list Fuel saving programme, target: 3% reduction in 2007–08 and 6–7 % 2010 "Green approach", potential saving every landing approx. 350 kg CO2 Fly slower – tests show 860 km to 780 = reduced CO2 by 420 kg on Bergen–Oslo CO2 offset programme. Customers to buy CO2 reduction equalling emission All SAS duty travels CO2 compensated Reducing weight – e.g. new seats Eco-cruise (distance, position and time allowing). Start June 2007, STO, OSL and CPH Continuous pressure on EU to establish the Single European Sky – 12% potential reduction More direct and efficient flights through EU/Nordic project (NUAC) Participation in national campaigns – e.g. Denmark: One tonne less (07/08) SAS particpates in "CO2 Reduction Network" with Tetra Pak, Maersk Line, Schenker, Arla Foods, WWF SAS puts pressure and hold dialogues with a/c and engine manufacturers, also alt. fuels SAS Group and the environment 2008

  20. Operational measures Arlanda's goal is to achieve 80% green approaches – transatlantic flights included – by 2012. SAS Group and the environment 2008

  21. Operational measures SAS's Fuel Saving Programme Goal: 3% reduction 2007/2008 6–7% reduction 2010 SAS Group and the environment 2008

  22. Infrastructure improvements With Danish and Swedish civil aviation authorities: Nordic Single Sky with participation of Norway, Finland and Baltic countries Within Eurocontrol: Ongoing effort to create a coordinated European air traffic control system, the Single European Sky Fully rolled out, fuel save and emission reduction by 10–15% SAS Group and the environment 2008

  23. Sustainable biojet fuel development timeline SAS Group and the environment 2008

  24. Economic instruments Why Emission Trading Scheme (ETS)? SAS believes that ETS is the most economically efficient and environmentally effective mechanism for reducing CO2 and reaching political and environmental goals. EU's own studies show that taxes/charges result in very high financial and social costs and are designed to limit demand. ETS allows operators and sectors to control their growth by buying permits in a cost-effective way from industries or sectors who are able to reduce. ETS is the main tool of the KYOTO mechanisms. ETS is in line with the Polluter Pays Principle. SAS Group and the environment 2008
