  6. Bible Survey – Haggai Theme: Setting the Right Priorities

  7. Bible Survey – Haggai Haggai 1:2-4 Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'This people says, "The time has not come, even the time for the house of the LORD to be rebuilt."' 3 Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet saying, 4 "Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses while this house lies desolate?"

  8. Bible Survey – Haggai Purpose of Writing: Haggai, along with Zechariah, was calling the people back to the work of rebuilding the temple. This theme of prioritizing the temple building over the rebuilding and improving of their own homes carries through the first chapter of this short book. The second chapter of the book is dedicated to God’s encouragement of the builders. Haggai promises that God will use both the rebuilt temple and the Zerubbabel the governor to bring himself much glory.

  9. Bible Survey – Haggai Christ in Haggai: • The Glorious Temple • Zerubbabel, the Signet Ring

  10. Bible Survey – Haggai The Glorious Temple: Haggai 2:9 'The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,' says the LORD of hosts, 'and in this place I shall give peace,' declares the LORD of hosts. Haggai 2:3 Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? Does it not seem to you like nothing in comparison?

  11. Bible Survey – Haggai Matthew 27:50-51 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom . . . .

  12. Bible Survey – Haggai Zerubbabel, the Signet Ring: Haggai 2:23 On that day,' declares the LORD of hosts, 'I will take you, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant,' declares the LORD, 'and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you,' declares the LORD of hosts.

  14. Bible Survey – Haggai Place in the Canon: Historically, Haggai gives us an image of what life in Jerusalem was like after the Babylonian exile. Theologically, we learn that God’s interests must trump our own. Devotionally, Haggai prompts us to put our money where our mouth is. If we truly want to honor God then we will want to see his work advancing.
