Japonisme Edgar Degas, who did collaborative works with Cassatt, admired her drawing of the back in this print: "I do not admit that a woman can draw like that."

Both subject matter –contemporary woman bathing – andstyle that was considered radically anti-academic and modern, are directly influenced by Japanese art.
