  2. Agenda • Welcome and Introductions • U-M’s Commitment to Energy Conservation • Environmental and Energy Initiative • Leadership Support • Mission of Planet Blue Teams • Building Utilities Consumption/Recycling • Energy Conservation Measures (ECM’s) • Re-commissioning (i.e. Tune-up) • Outreach Opportunities • Planet Blue Open House

  3. Planet Blue Team • Team Leader: Ken Verardi • Energy Conservation Liaison: Stephen Kunselman • Energy Engineer: Bill Richardson • Building Engineer: Kim Borregard • Recycling Coordinator: Tracy Artley • OSEH Rep.: Megan Loll • Project Manager: Kris Kolevar • Communications Specialist: Anuja Mudali • Manager, Mechanical Engineering: Eric Albert • Manager, Electrical Engineering: Yoshiko Hill

  4. U-M’s Commitment to Energy Conservation • 1980’s: Building Performance Teams • 1997: Energy Star Partner • 2004: Energy Conservation & Outreach (ECO) • 2004 U-M Awarded EPA/DOE Energy Star Partner of The Year for Leadership in Energy Management • 2007: Environmental & Energy Initiative Planet Blue

  5. Environmental & Energy Initiative The Six Point Plan: • Annual Environmental Report • Renewable Energy • Alternative Transportation • Green Purchasing • New Construction/Renovation Design Standards • Planet Blue

  6. Leadership Support President’s Environmental Task Force • “Plan for U-M to develop a more sustainable future” • EEI Presented to Regents in April 2007 • "We've done a lot of work behind the walls and above the ceilings. Now we want to more fully engage the building occupants so we can better align building systems to meet their needs and building occupants can better contribute to conservation efforts.“ --- Hank Baier, Associate VP for Facilities and Operations

  7. ISR Study of “Energy Conservation Behavior” 1. Develop and test methods and procedures for identifying: • What people think about Energy Conservation (EC) • What people already do at work • What they believe about the University’s commitment to EC • What they are willing to do. 2. Determine energy related behavior among faculty, staff, & students in UM buildings. 3. Enable policy makers to assess the impacts of past policies and the potential impact of future policy options. 4. Guide policy makers in how to engender energy-conserving behaviors among members of the university community. www.isr.umich.edu/energypilot/

  8. The Mission of Planet Blue To actively engage the University of Michigan community to conserve utilities and increase recycling thereby saving money and benefiting the environment. Save Energy. Save Money. Save the Planet

  9. Electricity:2005 to 2008

  17. Energy ConservationMeasures Definition of ECM • An ECM is to improve the energy efficiency of building infrastructure, including heating/cooling/ventilation systems, utility systems, roof, and windows. This is achieved by an engineering investigation to identify potential replacements of, or upgrades to, existing systems that enhance energy efficiency in a cost-effective manner.

  18. Energy ConservationMeasures Commonly Used ECM’s • Direct Digital Controls • Variable Speed Drives • VAV Boxes • Insulation • Lighting Retrofits • Faucet Aerators • Occupancy Sensors

  19. Re-commissioning Objective of Re-commissioning • To ensure the safe and efficient operation of a building’s mechanical and control systems • To identify opportunities for improving equipment performance to meet design specifications • To investigate energy conservation measures • To satisfy building occupant comfort

  20. Planet Blue Outreach • Thermostats Labels • Light Switch Labels • Motion Sensing Power-strips • Recycling/OSEH Containers • Posters and Signage • Website • Presentations & Training

  21. Planet Blue Posters

  22. Planet Blue Web Site

  23. Training Example • Overrides for afterhours ventilation Override HERE Override HERE

  24. The Open House • A festive reception for building occupants • Information on how your building works • Tours of mechanical systems • Energy Conservation best practices • Sign up to be ‘citizens’ of Planet Blue • Water bottles, T-shirts, & Food!

  25. Planet Blue Team • Coordinate the development and implementation of strategies for minimizing waste and energy usage. • Disseminate information on energy efficient building operations and waste minimization practices. • Conduct the planning, development, and execution of training, educational and awareness programs on energy reduction and resource conservation methodologies. • Maintain high performance building operations. • Coordinate building HVAC system schedules with occupancy use. Train occupants in use of overrides. • Monitor and evaluate environment and energy conservation efforts for identifying areas of deficiency and success.

  26. Planet Blue Team • Recruit Planet Blue Building Team • Please volunteer today! • Plan Wolverine Tower Open House • 2 to 3 meetings to coordinate event • Proposed Date and Time: • Thursday, December 4, 11:00 to 1:00
