  2. Definition: ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder A Behavioral Disorder of childhood Problems with: Inattentiveness Over-Activity Impulsivity Or a combination of all these problems

  3. Timeline: • If not treated it can lead to: • Drug/alcohol abuse • Failure in school • Problems keeping a job • Trouble with the law • Symptoms are present before age 7 • Present for 6 months to be sure it is ADHD • Lasts from childhood through adulthood

  4. Causes: Many run in families But not clear what causes it Depression, lack of sleep, learning disabilities, behavioral disabilities, behavioral problems are often confused with ADHD

  5. Symptoms: The symptoms of ADHD are put into 3 groups that have there own specific symptoms. • Inattentive • Hyperactivity • Impulsivity

  6. Inattentive: Fails to give close attention, makes careless mistakes Difficulty paying attention Seems not to listen when spoken to Does not follow instructions Avoids dislikes that require mental effort Easily Distracted

  7. Hyperactivity: Fidgets with hands, feet or squirms in seat Leaves seat when expected to seat Runs or climbs in inappropriate situations Difficulty playing quietly Talks excessively

  8. Impulsivity: Blurts out answers before question is even done Difficulty awaiting their turn Always interrupting

  9. Diagnoses: Based on specific symptoms At least 6 attention symptoms or 6 hyperactivity or impulsivity symptoms present before age 7. Symptoms present for at least 6months Must be severe enough difficulties in many settings

  10. Treatment: • Consists of therapy with health care provider, parents and child. • Medication: stimulants • Regular follow up • Healthy diet • Daily schedule • sleep
