  1. BBI-JU activities in Lithuania dr. Inga Matijošytė National representative at SRG VU Life Sciences Center Institute of Biotechnology Info Day on “Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking opportunities” at MITA 16th April 2019, Vilnius

  2. BBI JU activities in Lithuania

  3. Example of BBI JU project in LT US4GREENCHEMaims to design a biorefinery concept for the complete valorization of lignocellulosic biomass that is energy and cost-efficient and based solely on green technologies. The project combines enzyme treatment methods with ultrasound pre-treatment capable of breaking up the lignocellulosic matrix with reduced energy input and minimal production of inhibitory by-products. The substrate obtained from the lignocellulosic feedstock is then used in the biochemical field and in order to produce biofuels. The Lithuanian beneficiary, JSC “Biocentras”, is a scientific-industrial company established in 1988. The leader in business and science partnership in Lithuania is performing scientific studies and experiments and developing new biological products and technologies.

  4. BBI JU activities in Baltics

  5. BBI JU projects in Lithuania

  6. Opportunities for development of bio-based industries in LT Total area - 65 300 km² Land stock structure:

  7. Turnover in bioeconomy sectors in Lithuania Source: Lithuanian Bioeconomy Development Feasbility Study. 2017. The Study was carried out according to the March 24, 2017by public procurement agreement No. 8-49 between the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Lithuania and Aleksandras Stulginskis University.

  8. Labour productivity in bioeconomy sectors in LT GVA per persons employed (Eur thou.), 2014: Source: Lithuanian Bioeconomy Development Feasbility Study. 2017. The Study was carried out according to the March 24, 2017, by public procurement agreement No. 8-49 between the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Lithuania and Aleksandras Stulginskis University.

  9. Biotechnology - a tool for BBI development biotechnology Bioeconomy - the production of renewable biological resources and the conversion of these resources and waste streams into value added products, such as food, feed, bio-based products and bioenergy.

  10. The revenues of LT Biotech companies 1000 mln € Prognose for 2018 is made by LBTA and is based on private interviews 14 companies: Thermo Fisher Scientific Baltics, Sicor Biotech, Roquette Amilina, Biotechpharma, Biok, Bioenergy LT, Biocentras, Mestila, Rapsoila, Kurana, Naujoji Ringuva, Profarma, Probiosanus

  11. Importance of bio-based industries for the economy of LT regions and demand of its products in foreign markets • In 2016, in LT regions (counties) the value of export: • of biomass and fully biomass-based manufacturing sectors was 32.0%of the total export; • of partly biomass-based manufacturing sectorswas21.2 %of the total export. Specialization of LT regions in biomass and fully biomass-basedmanufacturing Specialization of LT regions in partially biomass-based manufacturing Export specialization (LQ) Export specialization (LQ) Specialization (LQ) according to created added value Specialization (LQ) according to created added value The greater the region’s specialization in the biomass and biomass-based manufacturing sectors, the more significant they are in the region’s export structure. 12. Opportunities to create more added value in the local economy: the case of the Lithuanian wood industry In 2017, Lithuania has exported about 1.7 million m3 round wood. EXPORT + 600 employees EXPORT + 200 employees EXPORT + 2 employees Data source: Girdziušas, S., Metslaid, M. Lietuvos miško išteklių pagrindu vystomi sektoriai Baltijos šalių kontekste. 13. Thank you ! In the development of industrial biotechnology and bio-based industries we are no longer limitedby our ignorance. We are only limited byour imagination. /Adopted from F.
