  1. ManchesterOther stuff Richard Seto NCC meeting Sep 16, 2008

  2. News • $200K came through (i.e. flavor changed to R and D) • Can’t be done till Nov, but EdOB is figuring out how we can spend money now – particularly for the Koreans • Some new options being pursued for design (not big changes – but optimization) • Edouard, Barbara ,Rich went to CALICE collaboration meeting in Manchester

  3. CALICE • CALICE (calorimeters development for the ILC) • Pursuing high density calorimetry • e.g. 2mm tungsten read out by Si pads 1x1cm2 • goal – to get 30%/sqrt(E) for jets using “particle flow” • Connections made • HERA B folks – W+Scint calorimeter • Japanese – Silicon Photon-multipliers • Discussion between Jean-Claude Brion and Rafeal • possible connection to English (manchester – david bailey, London U)

  4. Future • Prepare for prototype test at FNAL • Si+W as before with Strips • Si+Scint?? (hera B calorimeter) • come up with a design • Remember strategy for funding • R and D (money also next year) • $2M for capital equipment • Other sources (e.g. for RIKEN we need to show Delta G)

  5. Pads Silicon Design EM1 electromagnetic ~ 2mm W EM2 electromagnetic ~2mm W HAD hadron identifier ~4mm W APD’s Waveshifting fibers The Concept • Tungsten sandwich • 1.5 cm2 Silicon Pads or • 1.5 cm2 Scintillating tiles • high resolution strips in first ~3X0 readout sections One “supertower” Strips, 0.5 mm pitch x 6 cm Pads

  6. photon/Gamma • Dave Kleinjan and I – photon pi0 separation for Delta G measurement • Geant 4 (AIDA/JAS3 etc) • questions • can we readout front part with only strips • resolution of scint? • how many x-y strip layers? model in GEANT4 material (W) in front for strips

  7. 9 mm in front mean-207 σ~26 0 mm in front mean-207 σ~8 12 mm in front mean-207 σ~ non gausian 3 mm in front mean-207 σ~10 10 GeV γ, at 0° 2mm W, 1m scint W in front note X0(W)=3.5mm π0is similar need pad readout in front layers 6 mm in front mean-207 σ~18

  8. Resolution 1 GeV 2 GeV 5 GeV I fit to about 13%/sqrt(E) 10 15 20 GeV 30 GeV 40 GeV 50 GeV energy in Scint (MeV)
