  3. Helloween is one of the oldest celebrations in the world, dating back over 2000 years to the time of the Celts who lived in Britain and northern France. It has its roots in the feast of Samhain, which took place on 31 October each year to honour the dead.

  4. It was believed that on Samhain the spirits of the dead would gather together, talking on different forms. Bad spirits would manifest themselves as animals, with the most evil ones becoming cats. In order to keep these spirits away people would dress up in costumes made from the skins and heads of their animals and carry lanterns, made out of turnips, to light their way. These lanterns would be painted or carved with faces in effort to scare off any evil spirits.

  5. In 835 the date of 1 November was designated as a church holiday to honour all the saints. This became known as All Saints Day or All Hallows. On the day before All Hallows people continued to celebrate the festivals of Samhain, which gradually changed into Hallow‘s Eve or Hallowe’en as know it today.

  10. Children especially love this holiday, despite the fact that the school to this day not been cancelled. On the morning of school desks, strange creatures masked and scenic costumes, because most schools are organized feasts with food – Halloween parties.

  11. But the fun starts after class, when the kids in their costumes are sent home “cadge′" sweets. Coming into the House, is to say, "Trick or treat", which means roughly "if not, then we hand you nasolim". This phrase visitors have warned owners that if they don't get something tasty, then play on masters of any nasty joke.

  12. Similar traditions were in other countries, for example, in Wales. People, earnestly in costumes, staged processions, gathering food from residents along the way.
