Herman Melville • Lived from August 1, 1819 – September 28, 1891 • Occupation: Novelist, short story writer, teacher, sailor, lecturer, poet • Famous Works: “Moby Dick or The Whale,” “Redburn:His First Voyage,” “Typee,” “Omoo” • Made many voyages as a cabin boy and lived as a Typee Indian instead of on the Acushnet. • Married Elizabeth Shaw on August 4, 1847 • Had 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters

  3. Criticism to American society • The New York Day Book, on September 8 , 1852 wrote an attack on Melville that headlined, HERMAN MELVILLE CRAZY.
